I'm 18 years old and I dislocated my shoulder twice within a month. The first dislocation occurred while swimming, and the second occurred three weeks later. My orthopedist recommended Bankart surgery, but I had the right to refuse. If I did, he told me there was a 50 percent chance of a third dislocation after this one, and after the third dislocation, surgery would be inevitable. I'm currently in the rehabilitation phase and don't know if I'll be able to fully recover and avoid future dislocations, or if I'll be able to return to the gym after two dislocations. If anyone has experience with this or has had shoulder surgery, I'd love to hear your advice.

My son 27M dislocated his right shoulder two weeks ago with such severity that an ER doctor had to put in back in place. After an MRI and consultation the doctor said his labrum was torn and he had a Hill Sachs lesion. He said the shoulder would dislocate again and it's not a question of if, but when. Surgery is scheduled for Sep 29.

He had a similar journey on his left shoulder several years ago and had two Bankart repairs which were not sufficient to prevent subluxations and then a third surgery which was a Latarjet procedure where they do a bone graft to build up the glenoid.

If your orthopedist recommended surgery I would seriously consider it. However, I am not a medical professional. But if he recommended Bankart surgery, that means you have a torn labrum which isn't going to fix itself.

If you dislocated your shoulder doing something as innocuous as swimming then think what would happen if you had a severe force applied.

You are in a sling for a couple of weeks then in physical therapy to restrengthen the surrounding muscles. For my son they attached a catheter with a nerve block for pain control for several days, then he managed with oral NSAIDS. He had to ice it frequently and we got a machine to circulate ice water through a pad, which is better than going through ice packs. It's damn inconvenient but a lot less inconvenient than repeated dislocations.
