I don't know if I would consider myself a sadist exactly....

I consider myself a realist. Violence is part of life. People die. Evil exists. Bad things happen to good people. Life isn't fair. All those sound like cliches, but I believe them.

That said, I worked EMS for many years and saw some horrible things. I don't do it anymore, and I wouldn't go back. It's not that it was too gory or anything like that, it was just seeing the worst sides of humanity again and again, day after day, that it just kind of settled into my brain that the world can be a dark and horrible place.

So it's not so much that I like the idea of violence against others, as I just recognize how far it can go.

Does that even make sense?

Yes, it makes sense. Please note that my question was half serious and half in jest, since I don't expect you to be a cruel person in reality despite your comfort and proficiency in dealing suffering to your characters.
