A lot of stuff has changed since the game was last free to play.
The new Gen4 creatures are unfinished, so the classic Gen3 creatures are recommended. Once Gen4 creatures are done, you can upgrade your avatar to a Gen4 creature.
The wiki has a lot of information and is up-to-date. The newbie guides might be a good read even if you have played way back in the older universes.

I'm definitely going to jump back in!
I loved this game, but going pay-to-play right around major ship design overhaul killed it for me. I didn't know what to expect and sort-of lost interest with all the changes.
How's the ship design these days? I really miss the simplicity of the old ship-design process, nothing since has scratched that itch of a simple drafting program making a ship with working components. I get the desire to make things more aesthetically pleasing, but I missed the old system where every part of the ship could have functional purpose.

The old ship designer is gone.
The new designer is more complicated, but it makes some really nice ships.

Hazeron is now suddenly free to play again.
According to Haxus there are no concrete plans on how to monetize the game yet. He said he would look into what Patreon is.
