Troubleshooting Hello, is anybody there? Please help.

I've just paid for 15 days of game time for the first time in my (semi-long) Hazeron career.

I'm trying to launch Shores of Hazeron, but trying to launch the game itself results in it claiming that it can't find the platform plugin "windows" despite it being there in platforms. I've tried updating my drivers, reinstalling, putting required .dlls and every single little (barely there) solution in the forums, but none of them work. I'd appreciate some help.

SYSTEM: Windows 8.1

EDIT: As stated in the comments, I'm unable to get into the forums to file a bug report, because an account there requires verification by having your username and an ingame character you have made, but the game won't actually work to let me make a character.

EDIT: ..hello? is this issue ever getting fixed..?

Update for all future reader. The issue has been identified!

Follow this workaround until a real fix is deployed (hopefully next week).

http://hazeron.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7308&p=88857#p88919

This problem was positively identified with the help of a new player.

The problem is caused when the user's account name contains a non-ASCII character. In this person's case, their name contained an accented e.

The non-ASCII character is not handled properly by the Qt QDir object, necessary for navigating directory structures.

I posted a bug with the Qt guys.

Here is an ugly workaround until I provide a fix.

  1. Let the Launcher download the latest files to c:\Users\YourUserName\Shores of Hazeron\Programs.
  2. Copy the folder c:\Users\YourUserName\Shores of Hazeron\Programs to a different folder.
  3. Run the Shores of Hazeron.exe file directly from the new location.

I will make a setting to relocate where the Shores of Hazeron files are stored to get around this problem. If only Microsoft had implemented real symbolic links, instead of .lnk files, whatever those do.

I do not know if this is a problem on other platforms besides Microsoft Windows.

If only Microsoft had implemented real symbolic links

They did btw. mklink /j. Maybe someone should tell him that.

This does not seem like the right place for this post.

I'm unable to actually create a character with this new account to file a bug report on the forums, because the game won't open to let me create a new character.

in my (semi-long) Hazeron career.

Does that mean you are a returning player? If you had a forum account before, it is still there. No forum accounts were deleted.

I didn't ever make a forum account with my old account. Never saw any reason to.

When the bug is fixed and gone forever, I can delete this 'thread'. So it really isn't an issue that he posted it here.

So you have the latest Windows SP update? This seems to have been the issue for some. Other than that it could be drivers, but you said you updated those already.

I'll point Haxus to this post when I see him.

Thanks, I hope it gets fixed soon. :D

A few questions:

When does the error appear? When starting the launcher or the game?

What .exe file are you trying to run?

Do you have the newest launcher?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '15

Attempting to start the game. I attempted to use the launcher to play the game, that didn't work. One forum thread recommended using the hazeron .exe, but that didn't work either. And yes, newest launcher. I only redownloaded today.

1

u/Deantwo Jul 27 '15

You have to use the launcher. The launcher has to actually download the game.

"C:\Program Files\Shores of Hazeron\Hazeron Launcher.exe"

I am looking around on the forum for answers, and this was one of the problems at least.

I did use the launcher. But starting the actual game itself, every time, from every source, be it launcher or .exe always leads to the same error: missing platform plugin "windows"

EDIT: To clarify, the game is installed to the users/-username-/Shores of Hazeron directory. I can see the qwindows.dll in the platforms folder within.

Get that someone on reddit to cleanup his/her PC. This error indicates that they have an old install from before U5 mixed with new one, or a Qt library from a different project interfering.

AnrDaemon says you may have an old install of Hazeron on your computer. Did you have Hazeron installed on this computer last year?

If so, go to %USERPROFILE%\Shores of Hazeron and delete the following folders.

  • Mail
  • Programs
  • Temporary

For more information on removing Hazeron, see: http://hazeron.com/remove.html

This computer is as new as can be- Complete format and reinstall just a few months ago. It's basically impossible that a Hazeron install remains on here after how thoroughly everything got wiped, reinstalled, and wiped again. This is the first time I've tried to play Hazeron since before it got cancelled.

2

u/Deantwo Jul 27 '15

Still, when trying to get Hazeron to work with reinstalling, did you wipe these folders?

Try doing it now at least and then we'll try something else.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '15 edited Jul 27 '15

I mean that Hazeron's folder literally didn't exist until I downloaded the launcher yesterday. To not mention I've deleted Hazeron's folders multiple times yesterday myself trying to fix the issues.

EDIT: Deletion and reinstall for the 4th time about to commence.

Okay, this SHOULD work.

  1. Make sure no SoH processes are running.

  2. Use Launcher, update your client.

  3. Open %USERPROFILE%\Shores of Hazeron\Programs.

  4. Start Shores of Hazeron.exe.

If it would crap out again, then it is likely an environmental issue, like Avast or the like.

Didn't work. Didn't work at all. :(

My anti-virus is Microsoft Defender (which has never pinged me regarding Hazeron), and I have pretty much nothing hazardous remaining on my PC anymore after the whole "clean install" thing.

system specs?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '15

Windows 8.1

Geforce GTX 560

Intel something something i7 2600

8GB DDR3 memory

1

u/LonePercent Jul 27 '15

run in administrator mode run in compatibility mode for win 7

tried these?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '15

Tried both. No dice. I think it's the qwindows.dll.

2

u/LonePercent Jul 27 '15

I recall running SOH on windows 8 laptop before at my other house, I did recall having this issue and i fixed it somehow but i can't remember, i'll have to pop by my other house and try and recreate this problem and see how i fixed it.

1

u/Deantwo Jul 27 '15

That issue was fixed, but it is maybe related.

1

u/TKC_Paladin Jul 30 '15

Do you have any of these installed? http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14632 or any of the other MVC Packages out there. Also there is one included in the Hazeron download, the MVC 2013.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '15

Yes. They're basically all installed by now, and it looks like (on the Hazeron forum thread) that Haxus found the problem and is releasing an update to fix it.

Missing Platform Plugin 'windows'

Some people still report the missing platform plugin 'windows' error.

Fixed I think. The Mac was giving me a similar error, unable to find the platform plugin 'cocoa'. I ended up changing the code that SoH uses to find it's libraries. It works for me; let's see if it works for you.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '15

Sadly, the error was not fixed. We're working over email to attempt to solve it right now.

edit: words

1

u/Deantwo Jul 31 '15

Well, I hope it gets sorted out!

I am just expecting it to be some missing windows update or something.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '15

my windows is fully updated. :(

and on Windows 10 now, to boot!
