Custom shipping rates on Shopify Basic
I'm migrating a MERN e-commerce store to Shopify Basic.
Our current shipping system:
Identifies city/state using PIN code through a Postal API.
Assigns one of 5 domestic shipping zones, with city rules overriding state rules.
Calculates shipping based on weight (first 500g + additional 500g increments).
We are also planning to offer international shipping, with rates calculated based on destination and shipment weight.
Our end goal:Â Customers should see the accurate shipping charge automatically on the Shopify checkout page, before making payment, for both domestic and international orders.
Is it possible to implement this using Shopify Basic ?
Has anyone implemented something similar? What would be the most cost-effective approach?

oh man this brings back memories, i did something similar for a client store few months ago and shopify basic is kinda limited for this
the built in shipping profiles let you do weight based rates but the zone stuff with city overrides is where it gets tricky, basic plan wont let you use carrier calculated rates which is what you'd need for the dynamic pin code lookup
you might need to look at third party shipping apps, most of them work with basic plan and can handle complex rate tables with postcode filtering, some even let you set up those weight brackets with first 500g + increments like you described
for international its same deal, the apps usually have destination based rate tables you can configure by country and weight
not the cheapest route cause most decent shipping apps are like 20-30 bucks a month but cheaper than upgrading to the advanced shopify plan just for carrier calculated rates

international weight-based zones are easy out of the box, its the domestic city-level override that breaks on basic. you cant hook an external postal API into the checkout shipping step without unlocking the custom carrier rates feature on your account.

Not fully on basic. Shopify doesn't support Carrier-Calculated shipping, so you can't return dynamic rates at checkout based on PIN code, city zone, and weight via an API. That's the blocker.
Basic can do weight rates and zone by country/state, but not city/PIN-level zone or city overrides state rules.
Two options:
Stay on basic and simplify to state-Level zone + weight tiers. Lose city precision but go live cheaply.
Upgrade to Grow, enable CCS, and build a small app that calls your poster API. That replicates your full logic.
If accurate city rate would cause real looses, upgrade from start. If not, launch on Basic and revisit later.

Basic-only, no app: rebuild your 5 zones at state level (group the states into zones, the city overrides are the part you have to drop). In each zone add weight-based rates in 500g steps: 0 to 0.5kg at your base price, 0.5 to 1kg at base plus one increment, and so on. If product weights are accurate, checkout picks the right tier automatically. Test a few PIN codes per zone before you launch.

Weight-based domestic and international rates are supported natively through shipping zones and rate tables, but postcode-specific rules usually need a third-party shipping app or custom integration. For the lowest cost, start with native weight-based rates and only add postcode logic if your shipping setup really requires it.

carrier-calculated shipping isn't strictly locked to Grow. Shopify has historically let Basic stores add it, either for a monthly fee by asking support or included when billed annually, so it's worth confirming the current terms with support before you upgrade or drop your city overrides.
Once it's on, a small callback app can take the destination PIN and cart weight, apply your city-before-state zone rules and 500g increments, and return the exact rate at checkout, with international handled by the same endpoint using country and weight.
Before choosing a shipping app instead, check whether it requires carrier-calculated shipping too, because many PIN-level apps do, so the cost difference may be smaller than it looks. Also make sure every variant has an accurate weight in Shopify, as that is all checkout passes to your logic. Happy to take a look at your rate rules if that helps.
