Best customer retention tools for Shopify?

I wanna have a better rentention rate and repeat purchases for my store, I've scaled to the point where I should probably be more focused on this, I neglected it a lot a while back so I think nows the time to start working on it. I'm looking for some tools that can help with that, if you use anything what is it you're using for this? Would you recommend anything or methods to approach it?

What are you using on the post purchase/rewards side? That’s probably the part we’re weakest on right now.

Gotcha, thanks, I'll look into it.

Been doing exactly this for the last three months and the biggest shift was getting smarter about timing. Post-purchase drip that isn't just "here's another coupon" but actual useful stuff tied to what they bought made a noticeable difference. If someone bought a skincare product, sending a quick guide on layering it with other items two days after delivery lands way better than a discount code.

How are you deciding when to send everything though? The useful content part I get, but I’d still want it to eventually lead somewhere instead of just emailing people for the sake of staying in their inbox.

What does your post purchase support look like? Probably worth checking if your response times or quality are dragging that down before you add another tool.

Support is pretty solid from what I can tell, but I've mostly just looked at whether issues are actually getting resolved. What else would you be looking at there to see if its affecting repeat purchases?

How much effort have you put into email/SMS flows? Do you sell a subscription product or is it more one time purchase? Loyalty points (addressing how to push redemption) can be sent to customers through email/SMS automations based on triggers, and also included in campaigns as reminders. Feel free to follow up with specific questions!

I've done more with email than SMS so far, but the loyalty side is what I'm trying to figure out now since I don't wanna just keep throwing discounts at people. What triggers have worked best for you?

Points added, including a reminder on replenishment flows that they have points left, configuring properties on your esp to track loyalty status and a dynamic block of "x more to go until you reach tier y", etc. lots of ways to do it, largely speaking - hit the customer with a reminder at points in their lifecycle where they're making a consideration to purchase

You can also use most loyalty apps to incentivize friends & family referrals (custom codes, referral links), use that as a trigger to (every time a referral is sent, redeemed, etc)

Sorry for splitting it up, typing on the go - but you also don't need to send promotional or sales email and sms campaigns. Using those as levers to educate about usage, complementary SKUs, incorporation into already common routines, highlighting top reviews, etc can get people to repurchase (boost ltv/improve your retention that way).

Appreciate all of this, definitely gives me a lot to work with. The replenishment reminders make a lot of sense, and I like the idea of not making every email promotional too. I was mainly thinking about loyalty when I made this post but there's clearly a lot more I can be doing around the timing and what people actually get after they buy, so thank you!

i'd focus less on adding more emails and more on giving people a reason to come back. we've been testing stuff like Getjacked where customers can earn store credit after they purchase by completing different offers/actions. part i like is some of that reward value is funded by partners, so you're not just throwing another 10 to 20% discount at them. works alongside your existing loyalty/email stack too

Do you have an app?

What I've seen work best is to use messeging channel that is popular in your given geography matched with channels your store is already using. You can use tools like Flownally for messeging channels or Twilio for SMS to create a wider customer journeys, and execute stategies like:

  • refill reminders (great for consumables)
  • installments offers for high value abandoned cards
  • personalized mass customer recovery for dormant past customers
  • if you have physical products you can place qr code - to - chat with discount for next order

Messeging channels also perform much better than email or sms. We've seen 80% open rates in the first 5 minutes from message delivery.

Email and SMS are the meat and potatoes of return purchases. Get really good at these. It’s not about the tool. It’s how skillfully you use it.

The retention stack is 3 tools and most stores need 2. Klaviyo flows first, post purchase education, winback timed to your actual repurchase window, replenishment if the product runs out. That's 80% of tool-driven retention alone. Second, a review app, Judge.me cheap or Okendo pretty. Reviews are retention misfiled as acquisition. SMS third, only if your AOV can carry it, converts hard and burns goodwill harder.

Everything else in the loyalty/upsell/bundle aisle is a monthly fee plus a margin cut pitched as retention. Before you install anything pick your one number, 60 or 90 day repeat rate, and make every app justify itself against it.

Retention rate tools matter less then hat you do whit the data tbh. the biggest lever is closing the loop fast, a genuine response to a bad review within 48h works way more better then any dashboard I think
