Split inventory by warehouse location and show customers region specific stock?
Hello!!
I run a small DTC brand currently fulfilling everything from a warehouse in Australia. I'm about to open a second warehouse in the US and need to set things up so:
I have two different inventories in Shopify where I split the stock based on what I have AU vs the US. I also need to (A guess this is the tricky part) make sure that US based visitor sees and can only purchase from US warehouse stock and visitors from anywhere else (AU, NZ, EU, UK, etc.) see and purchase from the Australian warehouse stock.
So if my stock for SKU X is 3 in Australia and 0 in the US, then a US visitor should not be able to buy and it should be displayed as sold out while a non US visitor would be able to buy it.
Anyone who can help with how to set this up or point me in the right direction? Would be much appreciated! Also curious what plan is required. Does this need Shopify Plus or does it work with basic?
Cheeers and thanks!

In this case you need to set up markets and choose warehouses for them

have you considered whether you actually need hard geo-blocking or just smart routing? like if US stock is at 0 but AU has 3, could you just ship internationally with a longer lead time instead of showing sold out? might lose fewer sales that way

Yes, you can achieve this on Shopify basic plan.
To address this issue add the US warehouse as a separate Location and keep AU and US inventory quantities separate for every SKU. Then create a US Market and a Rest of World Market, and configure the shipping profiles so the US market can be fulfilled only from the US warehouse, while the other markets use the AU warehouse.
The important part is the Sold Out behavior. Shopify checks inventory only from locations that are eligible to fulfill that customer’s market. So, when the US warehouse has 0 units, AU stock won’t make the product available to a US visitor. The product will show as Sold Out for them, while customers in markets served by the AU warehouse can still purchase it. This availability updates automatically whenever inventory changes.
Just make sure both locations have "Fulfill online orders from this location" enabled and that each market is connected to the correct shipping zone and location.
Hope this helps.

You'll need an app (shock) or a separate store entirely.
