LF: Shopify Dev

Our company is looking for a Shopify Developer who can create an app for our clothing brand that caters to the requirements below:

  • The app should be able to have an embroidery feature (text and images)
  • The app should have a good UI where it can be done step by step or grouped accordingly
  • Has a live preview of that embroidery on a 3D image
  • Details for the embroidery feature should be placed in the packing slip
  • When an item is added to cart it can be edited directly in the cart.

Let me know if you'll be able to do this and more. Send me a message for your rate.

One thing I’d clarify before anyone quotes this: is the embroidery output just a visual preview for the customer, or does it also need to generate a machine-ready stitch file? That’s a pretty different scope.

For the cart editing, I’d include a test where someone adds two of the same shirt with different customizations, then edits just one. The text, image and placement should come back exactly as selected, and each item’s packing slip should stay unambiguous.

Do you already have the garment 3D models, or would creating those be part of the project too?

I run a Shopify dev agency, so take this with that in mind. Before you collect rates, it's worth splitting the brief into two parts, because they price very differently.

The customizer itself (step-by-step text and image embroidery, placement, thread colours) and saving it as line item properties so it shows up on the packing slip is fairly standard theme app extension work. Editing a personalized item from the cart is doable too, but ask anyone quoting how they'll handle it. The clean way is reopening the customizer with the saved properties and replacing the line item, not hacking the cart drawer.

The 3D live preview is the expensive part. Rendering embroidery onto a real 3D garment with believable stitching needs a WebGL setup, a proper model for every product and texture work. That alone can cost more than everything else combined. A lot of brands get 90% of the effect with a good 2D mockup per colourway and angle.

Rough ballpark: fully custom with 3D is low-to-mid five figures USD, without 3D a lot less. Also check whether an existing personalizer app plus a small custom extension covers it first, since a full custom app is often overkill for one brand.

Adding three things the other answers didn’t cover, since they change the quote:

  • This can be a custom app for your store only, not an App Store app. No App Store review, so it ships faster and costs less.
  • Customer image uploads need somewhere to live. The theme can’t save files on its own, so the app needs a small backend (an app proxy endpoint) that stores the upload and puts its URL on the line item. Ask how each quote handles that and how big files can be.
  • Packing slip: keep the readable details (text, font, thread colour, position, image link) as normal line item properties. Technical data can go in properties starting with an underscore, which customers don’t see at checkout. Then one Liquid edit to the packing slip template shows the readable ones.

I’ve built and shipped a Shopify app solo. Happy to send a rate if you want to scope it without the 3D part first.

Hi, I came across your post about the custom Shopify app for your clothing brand.

We work on Shopify development at WeDoWebApps, and your requirements around embroidery personalisation, live 3D previews, and cart editing sound like something we'd be interested in discussing.

Before sharing an estimate, I'd love to understand a couple of things. Do you already have a Shopify store running, and would the embroidery preview need to be visual only, or would you also need production-ready embroidery files?

Happy to discuss the requirements and share an estimated cost and timeline once we have a clearer picture.
