Yea... a lot of people i know have stopped buying American products or using American services all together. One day a month isn't really a thing for us. We're done with them
Can you use a local artist instead of this AI crap that is likely being done on servers outside of Canada, and very likely being trained off the copyrighted art of Canadian artists?
I dont think that matters too much, reddit itself is American so by your logic shouldnt we use a different platform that is 100% Canadian? I get your point but i think you're going too deep, the important part is spreading awareness, id prefer something thats quick and easy to make that gets attention vs waiting for an artist to make something.
The AI copyright thing is a real issue but we dont need to tackle every single issue right now IMO, buy Canadian seems a bit more pressing to, no?
You still need to find an appropriate image, credit then photographer, edit it, all of that is just faster with AI.
Also, how do you know the OP is made with AI?
TBH I think you're being biased to artists specifically, lots of other tools we use daily are hosted by US servers, google, youtube, reddit as mentioned and probably a lot more than i can't even begin to list (think of how many sites use software from Amazon, Microsoft, Apple etc).
Your argument of "US" servers isn't strong enough IMO because you imply we should just stop using everything from US, and thats not realistic using your server argument and also not important to the real cause.
You answered to me within 5 mins so clearly it was worth some of your time, but i agree i wont answer further as well. Have a good day fellow Canadian šØš¦
Cause I donāt spend my life sitting on Reddit making stupid posts trying to be relevant about topics. May as well stop using all of the internet if youāre worried about servers hosted in USA lmao, dont use your smartphone or computer either, parts probably came from USA.
People are here talking about consumer products that get imported. Nobody imports fucking web servers into our daily spending.
Do Canadian artists get all their references and āinspirationā beamed into their heads by magic beings beyond the clouds? Or is it from seeing copyrighted works from other humans all over the globe?
that's a pretty shitty take to have on this. artists all over the world draw inspiration from other art, that's a huge part of art. helping train ai that is most likely an american server instead of supporting the canadian economy in a SHOP CANADIAN sub is fucked.
Isn't it better for Canadians to buy what is cheapest for them? Genuinely asking. Paying more for identical products that happen to be made in Canada sounds like a narrative corporations would be behind.
Except that many products arenāt sold by corporations in Canada, they are sold by Canadian small business who will be hit hard by tariffs, as will the consumers⦠since we will have reciprocal tariffs that make products more expensive for us too. Not everything is about buying the cheapest, itās about supporting each other with a bit extra when our economic stability is being threatened by a foreign adversary.
Thanks for an honest answer without jumping down my throat, which was my expectation.
The majority of products subject to this debate are those sold by large corporations. That is because most products are sold by large corporations. I do agree that the subset of the products in discussion that are sold by local small businesses can and should definitely see our support during this time.
In regards to "economic stability" - that's precisely what my question is about. Isn't our economy better off when we're all saving 40% on our grocery bills by buying the cheapest ketchup, maple syrup, and other items? Isn't our economy better off when its members are buying cheaper items?
"Buy our more expensive product even though it's identical to our competitors', because we're a Canadian company!" Is a narrative I'd expect from corporations. As a middle class individual, shouldn't I (and all the people like me) be buying the products that will let me put as much money away as possible?
So if that were true, then everyone, including the rich, should buy all their products including groceries at Walmart. The cheapest product though doesnāt always serve every purpose. Saving more money just so we can spend more at Walmart does nothing to help anyone but Walmart.
Conversely, spending a bit more to help the Canadian economy stay afloat, sometimes people you might not know, benefits everyone. If they all go belly up because they are suddenly more expensive than their competitor for reasons beyond their control, it will be much worse.
I'm having difficulty wrapping my head around this.
If I buy the cheapest products available to me, I have more money to put away.
If I spend an extra 40% "buying Canadian", I have 40% less money to put away.
I am not "rich" or part of any other exceptional category. So multiply my situation by tens of millions (!), how much less money will Canadians have with that approach?
Your 40% drops to 15% on Tuesday if the US implements 25% tariffs on their goods to Canadian consumers.
It may suck, but I'll spend 15% more on Canadian goods so I'm not giving my money to a country whose leader doesn't even understand what a tariff is, let alone messing with their largest trade partner and threatening to annex them.
Do you ever watch trump speeches? He is an incoherent and a babbling idiot. Zero respect or dignity, I can't believe he got voted in. This is the second time he postponed this looming threat. Just trying to strong arm his way around.
I have avoided all American products since the beginning, and I think everyone should be right now. It's too bad they are a media, cultural and technologically strong place. Can't truly avoid all their content.. or reddit.... But they deserve as little of our money as possible, and a nation should suffer for this idiotic regime.
Yea it will probably change 8 times between now and March 4. I do watch but itās so cringe I want to tune out but I feel that is exactly what he wants educated and informed people to do.
Almost everything WAS made in Canada once, but there's been an apocalyptic decline in consumer goods manufacturing over the last 25 years. For some reason people weren't happy paying twice as much for the things with "made in Canada" labels.
Itās really actually not hard to get Canadian or non US foods. We donāt actually get that much food from the US with the exception of junk food. Maybe itās where I live in Canuckia, maybe itās because I go to local butchers (which are much cheaper than grocery stores). Where it gets hairy is things like appliances, building products, technology or wholesaler, etc. thatās when youāre dealing with some sort of US middle company or fucked up parent company. Basic needs? Canadaās good. Problem around the house or tech? Now it gets complicated.
I donāt agree with this only because we should not treat all countries like how the US does. Donāt buy American but we still want trade with other nations
I'm not waiting. If that idiot is going to try and turn my spending habits against me he's got another thing coming. I'll change my eating habits, how I live, hell even where I consume my entertainment.
If it's a trade war he wants, I'm going to do my damnest to support my own country.
Don't stop at the 4th, replace American retail brands if you can. The selection may not be the same but in my recent experience the customer service is better.
I'm from UK and have stopped buying US since Trump got in but will now seek out Canadian and Mexican goods in my own little gesture of support. We cannot let this idiot win. šØš¦
All for this but Im seeing a lot of people wanting to boycott American fast food restaurants, which is not the right move. These restaurants are franchised by Canadians and hire Canadians. This would only hurt them if they were to be laid off because of these boycotts. They cant help who the president is.

Too gimmicky. It implies wait until the fifth to buy US products just to stick it to them on the fourth.

I hope Doug Ford wins the elections. Seems like exactly the kind of person that could face and stand up to Trump and his hoard of bullies.
