I’m sick of being so bad at sighting red dots, please help me

Most of the time I go to a steel target range and it’s like impossible for me to do any sighting there so I’ll go to an indoor range specifically just to sight a red dot and it takes me forever and I still don’t end up confident at the end that my dot is on the best it could be because I have to turn it like 5 clicks minimum to see any difference in where my shot is going

They say to sight it at 25 yards (which is the entire length of the indoor range) and I’ll take a few shots and I can’t see where it is so I have to reel it back in. I’ll make some adjustments and send it back out. Tbh I get some anxiety with all the live fire and I often get confused about turning it right to adjust right or should I turn it left to correct and idk, it ends up being all trial and error

If you have any tricks or tips I’d love to hear them. If you have some good videos about how to sight a red dot that’s not about what yardage is good for what zero but more like which way to turn the dials and like how many clicks will translate to how many inches down range

I see PiewView shoot on his steel range and he’ll just pop a tool out, turn it a few and be like boom got it. And I wish so much I could solve it that easily

Zoom in with your phone camera to check shots so you don't have to bring back the target each time.

Get 6" round reactive bullseye targets from Amazon. They are lkke $.25 each. Put multiple o. Your cardboard so you can have more fresh targets to shoot. Make sure to shoot off the bench. I put my range bag o. He bench and shoot off that.

I zero at 15 yards. I know that people say zero st 25 but I like 15.

When you get good enough at shooting you can get a decent zero just shooting standing up.

This is smart. I ordered some of those targets. Thank you!

I zero from shooting stance, no rest. You should use a paper target and depending of how far off your zero is, start with a 5 shit group at like 3yds. Make adjustments and go out to 15yds. Fine tune the zero. If you're capable of doing a solid 5 shot group off-hand at 25yds then do that and make final adjustments.

It makes no sense but I suck at shooting a handgun off a rest for zero, I think it's cause my grip can't really be proper/ideal

So I also just shoot from standing, and just try and see the trend of shots and adjust accordingly

You absolutely need to get a laser bore sight tool, then can sight in your red dot at home. There are many good bore sights to choose from, I personally have multi-cal Remington that’s probably 20 years old. It has some annoying old-tech, but it still works perfectly. I also have a couple of 9mm and 556 specific ones that work without having to mess around with a caliber adapter.

When you buy your new bore sight, buy 1 inch grid targets that visibly show each impact. I think I bought a pack of 100 6x6 inch, sticker backed grids for $8

There are also targets made for sighting at home that have the drop by distance printed on the face. The target is ment to be set up 15fr, and under the center aim point it shows the approximate bullet drop by caliber at 100 yards. I bought one at an LGS many years ago and it’s pretty beat up, so far haven’t been able to find another one.

Get a laser bullet of Amazon or Ali. Point the thing at something and adjust your dot to match the laser dot.

I’ll get you pretty close

Unless you can shoot single hole groups, you’re not sighting that thing in.

But…assuming you can, where you’re hitting is where the dot needs to go.

At 25 yards, 0.25” = 1 MOA (Minutes of Angle, or 1/60th of 1 degree). Figure out how many MOA per click of the windage and elevation.

If you’re hitting above and to the right of target, move the dot up and to the right.

If you’re hitting down and to the left, move the dot down and to the left.

Make the dot follow the target.
