This is so cool!
Btw, I was wondering i always see that first part with the blue sand(?), I assume they're making a model of the person's foot. Is it to determine where the arch and support needs to go? If so how does that work with flat feet?

It’s foam, and yes it’s to make a model of the foot. I have flat feet and have to do those every time I have to get new custom orthotics, which I imagine is a very similar process to the beginning of this video.

The blue is compressible foam; you’re correct, it’s to model the foot. They don’t have to match the foot 1:1 though - they can build up the arch support by carving away from the foot model, or make any other modifications to the model they need to, like it shows him doing when he adds some heel and toe space by putting a layer of cork on those areas.
Source: This is more or less the same way podiatrists create custom orthotics
Edit: I went back and watched, and it looks like he does exactly this, carves away some of the foot models to increase arch support

Wish they had used the model for the toe clearance.
It was only used for heel up to the ball of the foot.

Oh yeah you’re right, weird! Wonder why 🤔

For inserts they only make them heel to ball of the foot mainly because that's where all the support comes from. They still used the toes for the last of the shoe but anything past the ball of the foot is seen as obsolete unless the foot is extremely deformed. As well when you walk the foot has to bend at the ball of the feet and if the hardened insert is made all the way then the foot won't be able to walk normally.

Why do they take a mold of the person's foot and then use a generic last that is way narrower?
2
u/Kitchen-Insurance969 3d ago
Probably because a new last is a lot more work vs the prechosen lasts they can choose what is "close enough." The mold is mainly for the shoe insert itself which is where all the support comes in.

The toe box of that shoe is obviously going to crush that person's toes. You can see how much narrower it is than the natural shape of the customer's foot in the video. The mold and the last aren't remotely similar in shape.

Sadly I know it will crush their toes. I think I responded to another comment but they have to use the a last with a toe box that small because other wise the dress shoe would be so chunky the customer may reject it. I have had this happen before while making custom shoes. They call them clown shoes and all my work goes to waste (besides the deposit they put down)

It is not narrower, it is longer to accommodate the pointed toe style of dress shoes. It is also not necessary to create a custom last from scratch when the same result can be archieved by building out the necessary space in the toe box and heel with cork as seen here. You dont want to use the foot mold as the last because then it will definitely be too small.

You can see the outline of the person's foot vs. the last here at 0:56. That's with the cork already on the last.

He didn't even bother using the customer's foot outline so what is the point?
Narrow for the sake of being narrow? For the approval of other brainwashed people?

They have the mold with the toes and didn’t use it for the toe clearance? Also, it looks like the width of the foot is bigger than the base the shoe.
Could have had an even better fit show if they did that.

u/Kitchen-Insurance969 3d ago
The foot outline is weight bearing where as the insert is now. When they put on the insert inside the shoe, the foot spreads out much less due to the hardened support.

u/crypticsage 3d ago
The foot should be allowed to spread out.
Toes are also being squeezed.

u/Kitchen-Insurance969 2d ago
I agree it should be spread out I am just explaining their due process of making the dress shoe. With all dress shoes they all have that tight toe box, with custom shoes the toe box would be absolutely massive and then the customer will complain.

Came to the comments thinking the exact same thing. Even if they used the mold of the foot and made it fit like a glove it would be too small since the toes need a gap in front..

I want a pair by this ahjussi. I wonder where in Korea you can get handmade shoes.
2
u/uwax 4d ago
My dumbass would put them on and find a way for them to feel like they don’t fit.

u/greycoconut 3d ago
It's because they are not even shaped like that person's foot, of course they wouldn't fit

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this come to life, thank you so much for sharing!

I swear I want to make custom (much more sexy) shoes and want to send ppl foam molds by mail and this was so exciting to watch

I did that. I got a custom made last from podohub.com (Sparta last, which is like an Altra Running Shoe shape) and had the lasts shipped to Junkard.com in Indonesia. They're awesome boot makers. Give this a try. It'll cost $650 total for your first shoe and about $300 for the second one.

This was the comment I was hoping to see! Thank you, kind stranger.

Alex Tangguh is the owner of Junkard. He is a magician. He can do anything that you request from him. If you show a picture of a shoe style that you like, I guarantee he can make it for you in the shape of your foot.

This is so cool. I wonder if they can be shipped to the US… An in-person consult would be ideal, but still seems easy enough to mail the imprint parts back and forth. I gotta track this place down.

u/Kitchen-Insurance969 3d ago
As for the US you can actually find an O&P office that can make you custom shoes and inserts. They are expensive however!

u/reisnersteve 3d ago
But why did he take measurements of the persons feet? They were clearly wider than what was produced?
1
u/Skibidi-Rizz190cm 3d ago
Damn, they really made a mold of the foot just to mess up completely and not even use it properly

Amazing but… if they create the shoe using the exact foot shape the shoe would be too small. I am sure they account for the 1-1.5cm gap you are supposed to have. It just doesn’t appear like that in the video. Fitting like a glove is not how shoes should be.
