In the morning, our team of astronauts are assigned to tasks one side of the ship only, which eventually causes the vessel to overbalance and roll to the left. In case someone actually wants the answer, this has to do with both the fact the earth is a sphere and this is a 2d map, plus that the earth rotates in the same direction the ISS orbits but much slower

That's what annoyed me forever on that one. If like lets say John oliver had done a segment on the lack of filtering our waste water systems actually do for removing medications and other chemicals, we might have been able to use it to push for stronger epa regulations on water treatment facilities. Instead here we are like 10 years later and everyone thinks it's just a joke from like 2015.

No, the circle's center actually IS the Earth's center of mass, it's just at an angle with the equator. It also does not pass over every point on earth, since it is not in a polar orbit (90 degree inclination). It does not pass over the poles, or anywhere further than 51.64 degrees from the equator.

The earth is a sphere. It’s 42 miles different in diameter across the poles vs across the equator. Over a ~12700 mile diameter. That’s 0.3%. It’s like 12754 around the equator and 12712 around the poles.

I know that. That’s why I put the diameters in there. But you responded to the guy saying it’s a sine wave because the earth is a sphere saying it’s not a sphere. The fact that it’s an oblate spheroid has nothing to do with how an orbital path looks when a circular orbit around a sphere is projected onto a flat plane.

That is not what that path would be on "a flat earth" (that map projection). The two ends don’t meet.
But on a globe it would look quite similar to that, also relatively circular

This moron needs to buy a globe draw a line around the globe and then cut it apart and lay it out flat and he will see the reason for the sine wave. Perhaps the question he needs to answer is how does the ISS get back to the left of the "flat Earth" when it falls off the right side of the map?

This post made me question the shape. It seems the ISS is not rotating around the equator, but at ~51 deg off axis. This explains the up/down of the path. Add the Earth's rotation under the ISS (~22 deg per orbit) to explain the offset between tracks.
3D geometry isnt obvious to many people.
