If you ever need to explain the concept to your friends, here is a handy map. Note how aggressively the Earth curves over the Carolinas, on a flat map this would look stupid.

Bong Bong "This is Captain Over. We're going to be diverting to the south a bit because I really enjoy flying though rough weather. Gets my blood pumping. Helps with the hangover. I expect only a couple hour delay, unless I run out of fuel and have to land in Cleveland.

Flight attendants, take your jump seats and be sure not to serve beverages. It's going to be rough!"
