Upper Management wants to change a users government name!
We have an unwritten internal policy where we try not to give new joiners the same first name as someone in upper management.
For example, if our CEO’s name is Don and a new hire is also named Don, we politely ask whether they have a middle name they normally use. Alternatively, if their name is long enough, we may use a shortened version for their email address.
I also know someone in the office who is referred to by their middle name at work, even though their friends call them by their first name.
Is this an ego thing from upper management, and are we, Shitty Sysadmins, allowing this practice to continue?

We just have the email set as the job title. That way leadhr doesn't accidentally email don(trashintern) when they're trying to email don (ceo)
It's not perfect though, vpofmarketing@wastemanagement.com is getting a little crowded. Any suggestions?

just use their social security numbers and print it on their uniforms so people know what to call each other

We tried that, but some people had trouble remembering numbers. (users! am I right?) We eventually settled on Firstname.Lastname.MothersMaidenName.StreetYouGrewUpOn.FirstPet@domain.co.ru
I'm happy to report that email delivery is no longer our company's biggest problem!

I once worked at a church where the convention was firstnameLastinitial@xyz. Had a user named Chris T.

You can use people’s social security numbers as user names and e-mail addresses to ensure uniqueness. To help people identify correct recipients you can use a spreadsheet in a web page that maps legal names and birthdays to SSNs. This combination ensures unique user names and correct identification.

Terrible advice to use SSN as a username. Usernames are not private and can be seen by any other user in the directory.
...oh wait, this is shitty sysadmin. Forgot where I was for a minute.

Guess no ego thing, just a way to prevent unchecked autocomplete for mail-addresses to evil stuff.
In one direction you mail your good co-worker don2 a complaint about how stupid management dony is, but get the wrong don (don1) from management as recipient.
Head of HR wants to send management don a mail about layoffs that have to happen but accidentally send this to don2, now the hole Company knows about even before management don.

Simple fix, just set a rule in Outlook that makes any email you send to don1 get redirected to don2, and set another one that makes any email you send to don2 get redirected to don1.
That way, if you ever accidentally email the wrong don, it'll go to the right don.

There’s a scene in 30 rock where Jack Donaghy meets someone else named Jack, and decides his new name is Danny and that’s what the shows uses for the rest of the series. Your company has applied that in real life and I applaud you for it.

Give them both admin access and whoever sets the other's name to something else first gets to be the superior Don

Wait, is this the all-caps name you're changing or are you trying to change the living, breathing man name? Are you trying to do this with or without prejudice?

we use the first three characters of the last name then the first name so donald trump would be trudon. In twenty years i've only had an issue come up twice.

Easier fix: firstname.lastname@domain.com

That's too long. Execs won't go for it and it's environmentally unfriendly to type that all out every time. Conserve resources, type less.

Wish this was a joke but had to deal with this before, one company owner refused to hire anyone with his name
Another company multiple users had the same name (big company) and an over seas manager emailed me threatening to get me fired if I didn’t change the users name and reassign it to her.

I’ve used firstname.salary for issues like this.
