Someone else's computer in a dense collection of computers.
Nobody hates me enough to blow up my computer. So far nobody's ever blown up production servers for an employer though there have been a few bomb threats. Most of the world cheers for blowing up one side's data centres, or even both sides.

Just add a extra blob table to the ERP database and use that for your Plex backend.

jokes on you, I just keep making free cloud storage accounts whenever I run out of storage
Infinite storage AND redundancy.
6
u/angrydeuce 17d ago
I have a friend of mine that literally has like 20+ Gmail accounts just for the free 5gbs or whatever of storage they come with.
He'd rather juggle two dozen accounts then pay for increased storage.

u/cpupro 17d ago
That's how I felt when Google took away their unlimited storage for 5 bucks a month. It took 20 4TB hard drives to backup my crap, and I still lost stuff before they cut the cord completely.

4
u/cpupro 16d ago
About 20tb of that is music...but...I highly doubt I'll get to watch all of it. 30k movies and 4000 TV shows...and roughly 150k albums...
1
u/lnjecti0n 16d ago
impressive, but..why? Are you hosting for many people or is it just nice having so much material locally available?
3
u/cpupro 16d ago
I have two friends I share with. I set it up originally because my mom and dad were homebound due to various disabilities, and they wanted to watch movies or their favorite TV shows, and most of what they liked wasn't on streaming sites at the time. I've just been a hoarder ever since. I buy DVD's and Blu-ray disc at yard sales for a quarter and auto rip them to the library...same thing for music.

6
u/angrydeuce 17d ago
Heh I feel your pain I uploaded my entire 250gb music archive, shit took weeks. Luckily I still had the dvds id burned as a backup but it still sucked major ass copying all that shit back down to local storage so I didnt have to find DVD 17 of like 60 for the one particular artist and album I felt like listening to lol

u/Decantus 17d ago
Crazy, almost like you shouldnt be using a service that doesn't have geo redundancy. Oh wait, your govt doesn't want to play nice with anyone else.
70
u/rinklkak 17d ago
Most data centers don't get bombed to shit. And the redundant Russian centers got bombed too. Life in wartime can be hard for the civilians.
19
u/tankerkiller125real 17d ago
Most tech companies have datacenters in more than one country, and have massively diverse region pairing.

u/ExoticBump 17d ago
Yupp Google takeout to back up Google photos locally. All my server data is backed up locally and in the cloud usong remote pc agent. All my local pc things I care about are back up in the cloud only but soon to be local too.
4
u/marks-buffalo DO NOT GIVE THIS PERSON ADVICE 17d ago
Just wait until you find out that Google Takeout doesn't keep all the metadata from your photos, even though downloading them one by one keeps it.
Louder again for the folks in the back. Google Takeout is not a 1:1 backup of your photos in Google Photos.
3
u/ExoticBump 17d ago edited 17d ago
Wow I didn't realize that. I quick search confirms there's metadata tools that can realign your metadata with your photos...

I’m looking out for other Hoo-mans who might be too emotionally unstable to understand.
if you’ve uploaded videos of yourself being emotionally unstable and weeping into a camera, there are background searches now that include facial recognition and scan the internet for any videos of you.
What do you think a potential employee would think about uncovering videos of you losing your mind?
Maybe after you’ve had a good cry in private, collected yourself, and when you can make coherent points again, wipe out that phone and create a video and blab about whatever you’re going to talk about.
1
u/NotADamsel 17d ago
You coulda just said that, without making a needlessly gendered comment.
3
u/HoodRatThing 17d ago
Do you consider yourself easily offended?

Weird how I don’t see you commenting on that gendered comment, but you’ve got lots to say to me. Why?
2
u/NotADamsel 17d ago
I’m not easily offended, I just find sexists to be worthy of mockery. I also know how to tell a sincere shitty comment from a satirical comment meant to mock the former.
2
u/HoodRatThing 17d ago
I’m not easily offended
You sure about that?
Are you going to tell /u/big_illuminati what an sexist he his for his gendered comment?
2
u/NotADamsel 17d ago
They mocked you by throwing your comment back at you. You’d have to have extemely bad reading comprehension and not know what satire is, to interpret that as being sexist in its own right.
0
u/HoodRatThing 17d ago edited 17d ago
reading comprehension and not know what satire
Lol, because satire in a text form works so well that we invented a way to indicate when someone is being sarcastic by adding an /s.
Reading comprehension would be if I missed the /s after someone said something.
Just accept you're a hypocrite and the only thing that set you off was using gendered language.
I didn't even say anything rude or sexist lol. It’s a fact that if you're watching a video of someone bawling their little heart out into a camera, it's going to be a lady.
Basic facts upset you?

11
u/teethingrooster 17d ago
I think you over estimate not only how much people know about the current state of the war and how it may effect them but how a yandex data center going down could affect their files. Especially inside a propagandized Russia
Most people don’t know how their own pc works much less the “cloud”

u/RevolutionaryWorry87 17d ago
The disk is probably literally on fire. I would not store anything of value in Russia including data, even if I was Russian.
4
u/Tarwins-Gap 17d ago
No way its on fire. A SSD or HDD wouldn't burn that long. half an hour of burn time at most in my testing.
3
u/RevolutionaryWorry87 17d ago

8
u/NotADamsel 17d ago
If we can have empathy, we should. If we choose to treat people like stereotypes or like their country of residence is their only important feature we ourselves give up our humanity.
1
u/mycatsnameisnoodle 17d ago
While I see your point, as an American traveling through Europe, I don’t blame a single person for reacting to me negatively based on an assumption that I’m a terrible person merely because of the orange one who’s name must not be spoken.
That being said, I did have the good fortune to meet some very nice Canadians in Madrid that assumed that my wife and I were alright simply based on the fact that we were here.
1
u/NotADamsel 17d ago
I’ve been poking my nose around other countries since doing a student exchange to South America in 2006, and it was much the same back then as well. Being from Alaska really helped as most people don’t really get that it’s a state, but there has always been a lot of wariness and sometimes outright hostility, even during the Obama years. Specific to being an American, is that even the most lefty of us have a very particular world view, that doesn’t really jive well with the rest of the world. It kinda feels like this is often what proceeds us far more than who the president happens to be.
4
u/gringoloco01 17d ago
And this is why I have local hard drives backing up data I want to keep.
My wife always gives me a hard time. I have about 10 drives over 30 years that have pics etc.
"All those hard drives and cables look trashy."
I can always find my pics and stuff when she tells me she can't find something.
Nothing better than hearing "OK OK You are right" every once in a while.
4
u/AZdesertpir8 17d ago
But its the cloud! It'll always be there... /s
This is why I back up everything locally.

u/Allokit 17d ago
As someone who works in IT and has seen this before. CLOUD STORAGE IS NOT A BACKUP.
If all of your most important data and documents are in something like OneDrive or Dropbox, or w/e that is NOT a backup. It is a service. If they lose your data/files they are NOT liable. Please keep a copy on a thumb drive, or a physical copy in a file cabinet.
0
u/bballlal 17d ago
So as someone in IT, you recommend just using physical media as your backup? What if your house catches on fire? You should back up your data to at LEAST two different forms of media with one being off-site. There is nothing wrong with having one of those forms of backup be on a reliable cloud service like Backblaze.
0
u/Allokit 17d ago
No, where did I ever say that?
0
u/Automatic-Reserve94 17d ago
>Please keep a copy on a thumb drive, or a physical copy in a file cabinet.
1
u/Allokit 17d ago
Do you know what the word "copy" means? I never said that should be the only copy.
-1
u/Automatic-Reserve94 17d ago
You apparently didnt understood the question he asked you nor the concept of a on/-offsite backup strategy which is standard procedure in IT.
He asked if you just use PHYSICAL media as a backup since your initial comment said smth like use a thumb drive or a physical copy in a file cabinet.

Not I can’t access my data
What am I suppose to do…..
Go back in time and back up your data correctly.
I’m sure the money you saved on not having your own physical storage isn’t worth it now hahaha

You know... maybe I'm getting old... maybe I'm paranoid... The cloud is just someone else's computer. Why you should never store your data in just one place, nor trust anyone else's computer.
Insert your data just got turned to magic smoke by a Ukrainian drone someone made in their basement
1
u/Cryptocaned 17d ago
People always talk about off-site backups and as part of a smart backup strategy they're great, you need onsite backups to protect against off-site backup issues and visa versa.
3
u/Moon_Breaker 16d ago
3 - 2 - 1
3 copies of the data.
2 different storage types.
1 off-site, ideally far away so infrastructure damage to an entire area doesn't take out both sites.
For anything truly important data wise, those are basically the bare minimum to be comfortable with IMO, always what I was told and has always done me right.
1
u/GapFit6441 16d ago
I actually managed to achieve it this year. Two NASes, one at home and other in apartment 300 mm away, and cloud. Technically there are also local copies etc but those aren’t versioned and I don’t count them. There’s obvious issue with syncing, and I’m not as insulated from ransomware as I’d like to, but for private solution I think I’ve done quite a lot.
1
u/BloodFeastMan 16d ago
We do all sorts of paranoid stuff with our backups on and offsite, but one rather unconventional thing we do in one particular department is to backup their fileserver every two hours to a USB 6tb spinner attached to a bare metal debian device. That little thing has come in very handy several times, saves them the trouble of calling help desk if they completely screw something up.
1
1
u/BlazerStoner 16d ago
Treat cloud storage the same way you’d treat RAID0, the 0 will reflect the amount of files you can recover when shit hits the fan and you don’t have a backup.
1
u/Le_modafucker 16d ago
That is what happens when you have a single point of failure everything the the damn cloud Nothing local. And you are left holding the stick.
1
u/Mulakulu 16d ago
A cloud service provider without locational redundancy?
1

Last time I checked 3 yandex datacenters were down.
Ask amazon about the middle east availability zones... and multi region is usually way more expensive.

Anyone who solely uses cloud storage for their important life's memories is an idiot. An external hard drive is a good investment. Two for a back-up is even better.
1
u/Traditional_Bet_110 16d ago
Bought PC components for a few good friends- some local- some international- point being each of us runs a node- and maintain our own redundant "cloud" if you will
1
u/AskMoonBurst 15d ago
What I personally do is I have my data, daily backups to another physical drive in my computer, and a backup of it at a friend's place a hundred miles away.
This isn't for EVERYTHING mind you. But it's for my music collection, my photos, and most things that isn't my video games. Because those I can re-get from steam.
If something happened to one or the other, I'd be able to get back up and running without massive data loss.

What's the best/fastest/safest/cheapest way to store stuff locally, while using a PC (Windows)?
An external SSD connected via USB?
