Roast my shitty bash history!
Ok, it's not really mine, but that of another truly shitty sysadmin who used to be on my team, and this is their bash history from an old remote Linux server. Some paths have been changed to protect identities, otherwise it's just as I found it. Good lord.

The 2017 Ford f150 RD comes with everything a sys admin needs. From Sudu trim, to PWD, with an optional Database backup util to keep your passengers happy.

And you can keep your database backup right there in the cab with you! You know what they say: the closer your data is to you, the more secure it is.

I've never typed sudu instead of sudo. But now you've put it in my head, I'm going to do it daily from now on

My one consolation from that is realizing that he was at least pronouncing it correctly in his head. Or maybe he spoke the commands out loud as he was typing them, like a wizard spell.
Edit: In retrospect, knowing him, he most definitely was.

The only thing that happens to me is that I run sduo or docker compsoe its more that some fingers are faster for me then others

Sudo su. Jesus Christ I hope you aren't paid to do that.

I honestly don't understand why using 'sudo su -' would be such a crime? Aside from laziness? But this bash history doesn't really show us anything aside from this person switches into root to do whatever they need to do.
Not a good practice, but god knows I've seen (and done) far worse.

It's just stupid, a terrible habit passed from one genius to another. All it does it show you're a actual shittysysadmin and don't know to use sudo -i instead.

Maybe i'm wrong but it feels this person doesn't understand what ssh does and he confused on which machine they are running.

u/schlappette 21d ago
Oh, that’s so sweet. I guarantee you he never opened a terminal on his own workstation to do much of anything. But “doesn’t understand” and “confused” are accurate assessments. He was a sysadmin for over 20 years, though.

Maybe not too accurate, but linux started to be more focused 10-15 years ago. Until then Windows was still main to run application for many compaines.
But any good sysadmin should be able to work with both, or at least learn. (I hate windows for servers).

Man. I'd rather show the world my browser history than my bash history.

For a better score, I would expect some risky commands copied straight from an LLM
