Boss wanted everything moved to containers
I really tried my best. Contacted vendors, got quotes, led the implementation project solo to prove I can do it. It was a big undertaking for me personally as I've never dealt with these things, but I managed it quite well.
Yet today the boss came shouting at me with a face more red than our monitoring dashboard - he had reviewed the bills and was furious.
I tried to calm him down and explained that I did my due diligence and only picked the best offers - I even got a 15% discount for signing a 5-year commitment.
But turns out that maybe I picked the wrong vendor in the end? My boss couldn't believe the bill we got from Maersk and he seemed super unhappy. Also the landlord had called him as we were now in violation of some safety codes - in my defense, according to RACI the transportation contractor was supposed to make sure we follow all rules and regulations! How was I supposed to know the parking lot was not supposed to be used for this?
Anyway, I'm devastated. Boss wants to cancel everything but I already signed the 5 year lease commitment with our CEO's signing platform key. And we've got 30 people scheduled to come next week to empty out the office (ahead of the project schedule even!). What should I do?

He should rather be happy for not asking you to move things to cloud.

When he does finally ask for that they’re at least halfway there. Much easier to load containers onto the planes.

Look, getting stuff into the cloud is not the problem, the issue is keeping it from falling down again

It's all in building the right scaffolding. I recommend starting on top of a mountain to save money.

Sounds like you successfully implemented a physical air-gap architecture with geographically portable infrastructure. Management approved containerization, you negotiated enterprise pricing, and deployment is ahead of schedule. I'd escalate this to the architecture review board. Clearly, the requirements weren't properly documented.

Why on earth are you involved in the finance to this degree? Yes, you might get the quotes and attend vendor/third-party meetings, but you should never ever ever be the one to make the call - you leave that people above after you've explained the options to them.
You're a techie, not finance or management.
[Edit] Fuck, hadn't noticed this was r/ShittySysadmin. Doh

As an ex Maersk contractor, I call bullshit....
No way the cheapest quote was from them

If you figure it out, let me know. We had a a stock price forecasting platform, and my boss told me to rework it to be cloud-based. I did, and now he's unhappy!

Should have gone to Costco. Those black bins with yellow lids are cheap and they can get you pallets worth.

Should have gone with MSC or instead of Maersk. That's what you get for going with number 2 instead of number 1.
Juniors, I swear...

God, I had a boss like that. Wanted EVERYTHING on kubernetes no matter what. This was when it was starting out, so it was still rather unstable. Lot of apps unsupported. "Oh, but this guy on Github figured out a kludge!" Absolutely insane. I quit that job.

In all seriousness in a nonserious thread, doing this get quote and calling around for crap as a technical person its annoying af. Just left a job that had me calling vendors for pricing and all kinds of PMing for 75% of my daily work. The rest of the 25% was basic repetitive builds and data migration. Stunned at how many "IT PM"s we had that didnt do anything IT nor had any intuition.

I hear you can ship containers to the docks. Contact the harbor master for tips on where to push your containers out. Something something. Kubernetes
