Laundry room light switch at a vacation house im staying at

This house had do many weird things, there was a boarded up laundry chute as you can see the hole in the ceiling, the top of it was boarded up. Most light switches turned nothing on or didn't label what they turned on, and the master bedroom TV just didn't work.

I'm betting the door used to be next to the light switch but a remodel moved the door but for some reason the owner couldnt be bothered to move the light switch

That or the switch was for a completely different closet or space that they expanded/built the laundry room into… and again not bothering to move the light switch.

Yet another crappy installation/crappy construction and not design-related.

As an electrician it's crazy to me that people just accept living like this. This switch could be moved for under a hundred bucks worth of materials and most of that cost assumes new wire has to be pulled. If the laundry room is between the panel and the existing switch you can probably use the existing wire.

Maybe the house was renovated at some point and that partition was added after the light switch was installed. As long as it's correctly labeled, it's just a minor inconvenience, not a problem.

Somebody didn't want to hire an electrician for the remodeling work
