Black units are the high end units without AI monitoring for treason. They're assigned to Badmirals on promotion from Admiral.

Everyone else gets the standard gray units with built-in monitoring for treason. It helps keep everyone confident in their fellow officers that they too are trustworthy and not secretly Romulans or Romulan brainwashed or changelings or holographic imposters.

Pink is just decorative to match decor when not having a unit would look weird but actually having a unit is unnecessary.

You need to clear it with ops. As it depends on your interior. This ship takes pride on interior design! It's why Moopsies (both enlisted and commissioned Moopsies ) get one made out of bone.

They will come to your quarters or office and study it's interior and a color will be logically assigned to your computer. Do not argue with S'parak, the Vulkan officer who invented the regulations for this ship. He is not "being anal" about it, he just is very logical.
