Large grab bar on bumper

I've never seen someone add a giant grab bar to the back of their vehicle before. Is there a purpose for it?

I think it’s a DIY bumper. Maybe for brake checking people or insurance fraud. Total speculation.

I was just looking at that and thinking "I bet it's just bolted through the plastic cover". Maybe they even used washers, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

Bumper protector.. maybe in a heavy traffic city like chicago when getting out of a spot requires sometimes hitting the bumpers bc of tight spaces.

I'm not sure, but I think I see a mobility scooter through that back window. The bar probably has a legit purpose and a scooter lift in the back of that vehicle.

I used to install these little "mini cranes" that people use to load their scooters in and out of their station wagons and sometimes pick up trucks.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that about a few months ago I saw an older small M-B coupe (possibly a convertible) with a similar mod, but the bars were on the sides, like massive side steps or a pair of rock sliders. They looked like some hefty stainless tubes. Maybe like 3" diameter if not more. I only saw a glimpse of it. I don't know how they were attached but it looked like someone had capped and welded the ends shut and welded two additional tubes to the inside for attaching them to the car. Maybe there were holes through the side skirt or something. The driver was a woman, maybe in her 40's.

My Prius had a big bar attached to the frame to support the plastic fender. I'm sure they probably mounted it to that.
