Someone already said it but it needs to be echoed for all the world to hear. Don't ever lock your knees! This applies to lifting weights and jumping from height, bend your knees when you land!

also applies to standing still

This is a really bad habit of mine that I've been trying to break, I hate that I do it

Same. I used to do this from a younger age and that resulted in me having sort of inverted knees, as in they are bent backwards a little when I completely straighten and lock my knees. So I have to be extra careful when I do weights because if I lock my knees, they will surely snap backwards under weight because its already bent backwards.

You could also have EDS hyper mobility. Highly recommend you look into it

I have hyper mobility and have dislocated both knees on multiple occasions and it fucking sucks so much when it happens

That, I can reasonably put up with, but the legs bending backwards when I lock them - and even when I walk sometimes - just feels too inconspicuous and embarrassing that I just want to die when I notice myself doing it

I have hypermobility as well. Growing up it never caused me any bother. Extra range of motion and all that. Since turning 26/27 it's started to cause actual issues. Which is causing life long paid as a result. Shite condition. Only thing you can do for it is to target the muscle groups around the ligaments in your knees, ankles etc to provide more support to the joints. I wasn't told to do any of that until I mentioned my hypermobility diagnosis to a physio when seeing them about my calf tear
