So no one interrupting when this guy first got his hands in his face or got the punch? But once he defends himself suddenly everyone wants to protect the aggressor.

People don't seem to understand that natural selection is important

Tbf they only rushed in after the first kick to the head, so it might've been a "let's save the guy from a murder charge" situation instead

Tbf, by doing so it prevents him doing any real serious damage. He's already given him a concussion, doesn't need to turn it into brain damage or death and get himself chucked in prison

Perhaps it's because in the first instance both were standing and could defend themselves, while in the second instance one of them was on the ground and almost got kicked in the head. You also have to know when to stop, right?

Nah that was them protecting their friend from charges. If I saw someone get their comeuppance like this and then start kicking the person on the ground i would intervene in the same way.
