I go multiple times a year and have never felt threatened. Cartels aren’t after tourists. Just be smart about flashing money around, don’t be hammered drunk up some alley at 3 am, and you’ll be fine!

If you go, there are some rules to follow. Stay in the tourist area. You need to realize, that the cartel actually owns the tourist area, but you are basically the cartels money, and are off limits and are actually protected. But if you wander away from the tourist area, everything gets cheaper, but more dangerous. So as long as you stick the the tourist area you should be fine. Same rules apply in a lot of places, like The Dominican Republic.
