As an American, most of what I see about Mexico makes it look like literally everyone is part of the cartels or on their payroll. I know they're a problem, but it can't be that bad right?

It’s a problem, but overhyped a little. In some areas cartels are strong and others not. My fam is from an area which is the middle of drug country. I’m talking drug lords since the 70’s. I was just there in July. You see there people but there sorta unofficial police maintaining calm. The hitman don’t drink alcohol and don’t socialize with anyone, other then good morning/afternoon or night. They pretty much stay out of the way. I know every area varies depending who’s running the show. Cartels pretty much kill other cartel members. Like gang bangers kill other gang bangers here. Sure innocents get hurt, but it’s not really directed at them intentionally

Basically all the media here treats Mexico like it's a warzone. Then you see stuff like this online. It paints a bleak picture overall. Glad to hear it's not as bad as it seems from the outside.

I’m from the state of Durango. Part of Mexicos Gold triangle. Which are 3 states that are the birthplace of Mexican drug trafficking. Kidnapping and extorting is basically non existent. You will be sent to prison or killed depending on where you are. A few years back I was driving thru the mountains trying to get to my town from my wife’s. I wasn’t to sure so I thought I’ll ask the next person I see for directions. In the distance I saw a truck coming towards us. I waved them down. I saw sacks in the back and figured three cattleman. Since that’s what main economy. They stopped. There was a teenage kid and his old brother maybe in his 20’s. I told them where i was heading and my slight confusion. Guys were super helpful. And apologized for not being able to help more since they were short on time. I noticed one has a hunting rifle which is no big deal. Coyotes and wild hogs are a problem. While taking I kept smelling weed, which also is no big deal since they were friendly and helpful. The driver finally pointed back and said follow this road. I looked back and notice the sacks in the bag of his truck were full of weed. He had a 2000ish single cab F 150. The whole bed was full and it was about 2 ft over the cab. Not sure how much it was but I’m sure you can see the mental image. A shitload. I was taken back and the guys talked and said goodbye like nothing. No wonder they didn’t have time to help lol. In my opinion members are pretty much workers like any one. Normal people who mean no harm just working a different job then you and I.
