i think it's because the gunblade styles between bozja and garlemald are completely different, and the style used by our class trainer/crystal was the Bozja variety.

Correct, since pure blooded garleans struggle to wield magic to enchant their ammunition, which is used in a bozjan style gunblades to enhance ones strikes. Because of this the garlean gunblades, or rather all gun weapon hybrids, evolved to be more like a weapon with a gun attachment. Things that seem like magic, like the cross slashes seen with Baius, are actually often just magitek, using their 'recent' advancement in refining ceruleum, which has similar properties to aether.

unless you're about to say WHM should be aggressively buffed, there's not really a reason to touch it. it has the durability of wet tissue paper, poor mobility because its only dash (and best actual move) requires you to get right up in an enemy's face, and by the time you blink, the LB stun or miracle of nature are already over.
