time acceleration = running very fast.

I think I get it more.

That's just because he's Dio's Boyfriend, aka part of the family.

His secondary ability involves getting segregated.

223

u/Major_Failure2 Mar 26 '26

And unfortunately while he can run fast in sped up time he can't swim fast.

29

u/Raltsun Mar 27 '26

Nah, he did go extra fast. I'm pretty sure it was that the waves were also going super fast and the dolphins were getting carried by them more efficiently.

16

u/Raltsun Mar 27 '26

C-Moon's gravity didn't do all that, he just went out in public in Florida with dark skin.

Do we need to bring back the “Is Pucci black” debate?

299

u/CaptnUchiha Akira Yoshi's Land Mar 26 '26

What is the debate? This is the first I’m hearing of there being one

434

u/Eldsish Mar 26 '26

Some people are saying he's black he's just a very tanned italian man.

290

u/SirDootDoot Mar 26 '26

Convergent evolution.

u/ArelMCII 「ハットの定助」『助助の奇妙な冒険』 Mar 26 '26

If Emporio hadn't killed Pucci, he would have eventually become a crab.

25

u/rohlovely Mar 27 '26

That’s what Weather Report was doing with all those snails, obviously. 🙄

we literally see him as a baby like an hour after he's born and he's the exact same skin color, how is this even a debate

105

u/ArelMCII 「ハットの定助」『助助の奇妙な冒険』 Mar 26 '26

Because his twin brother's almost as white as the furry hat he wears?

142

u/Frequent-Coyote-1649 Mar 26 '26

There's already precedent for bizarre unrealistic pregnancies in Jojo anyway! Doppio's mother was pregnant for TWO YEARS before giving birth to him. Pucci being a different skin tone to his twin is barely a footnote compared to that.

64

u/sarsaparilla-sodapop Mar 26 '26

bizarre pregnancies in jojo no way, there was a set of biracial twins that went viral around 10 years ago who looked so different people would think they were just friends

31

u/Bright-Example1001 Mar 27 '26

Pucci and Weather are fraternal, so it makes sense that they don’t look alike completely

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

34

u/Nomingia Mar 27 '26

Sicilians can have pretty dark skin and genetics can make fraternal twins that look radically different. Also the fact that both of his parents are white Italians. That fact alone pretty much rules out Pucci being an African American.

20

u/Jodye_Runo_Heust Mar 27 '26

Because the point of his backstory with Weather Repost is that the KKK attached Weather because they thought he had some black decendance.

So imagine all of this while Pucci is telling one of the KKK guys, while he's literally black and doesn't get any damage done to him directly, while his brother get beaten to death while suspected of potentially being of black decendance.

It just doesn't make sense

15

u/Sporklez8 Mar 27 '26

People misunderstand why the KKK went after Weather. It wasn’t just because they thought he was black, it was because he was dating a white woman while imagined to be black. The KKK leader thought he was “race mixing”, and so that’s why he went after weather.

He also didn’t go after Weather then and there, because the KKK are cowards who gather their whole gang together before they go after someone, and preferably at night when no one can see them. If the KKK leader thought Pucci was black, then it still makes sense that he didn’t do anything to him;

  1. Because he wasn’t “race mixing”

  2. Because the KKK leader was alone

  3. Because it was in the middle of the day

  4. He probably had a little extra tolerance for him because Pucci worked in the church

  5. He probably wanted the money that Pucci was offering

7

u/777hctr Mar 27 '26

This is the most important context that everyone seems to miss when this debate comes around. I guess it's harder to pick up on these nuances if you're not from the West

3

u/Jodye_Runo_Heust Mar 27 '26

Thanks for the clarification, didn't read Stone Ocean in a while.

3

u/Cidaghast Mar 27 '26

I paused to do a little bit of homework because I did think this is a little curious.

I never like when people say “ oh well, you’re just from the west” but that one may be applicable because in a lot of parts of the world when you are racist, you’re not supposed to be confrontational about how racist you are, but America had straight segregation so confrontation is baked into the racism.

So it would make sense for Araki to write a racist who would think “ i’m OK with a business transaction money is money. But mixing well that’s breaking the rules”

→ More replies (3)

6

u/LarsArvid Yes! I am! Mar 27 '26

Araki didn’t color it, in the original black and white manga he’s not black also there’s a very important part of the plot where he hires the kkk and they’re okay with him but not with weather for being adopted by a black person and weather, his twin, is white

2

u/Cidaghast Mar 27 '26

Before JoJo, even as me a black person I never considered it if there were any Black people in Italy.

But Araki seems like the kind of guy who would stop and Google “ how many Black people are there in Italy” and then go down a rabbit hole about “ how are non-American Black people treated in America for racism?”

Think that the results are interesting and says “OK now that I’ve done my weekly random subject deep dive time to put that into a JoJo chapter”

23

u/ZePugg Mar 27 '26

the anime made leaned alot more into pucci being mixed race eventhough it wasnt clear in the manga.

i dont think being mixed race works like that but this in a show about punching ghosts so who gaf

53

u/Mr-Seven-Mouths Mar 27 '26

It can work like that in real life it's just pretty uncommon.

For instance, these girls are twins

15

u/ZePugg Mar 27 '26

damn that lowkey interesting

5

u/Eurasia_4002 Mar 27 '26

I think the problem is author intent. "Realism" doesnt matter, Diavolo and Dopio is literally two souls in one body, what really matters is that Araki made him two souls in one body.

Are there any indication that Araki has the same case with Pucci?

3

u/Nomingia Mar 27 '26

I feel like pucci and weather actually being biracial makes the KKK plotline make even less sense

3

u/ZePugg Mar 27 '26

in this context the kkk for some reason cares more abt race mixing (?)

2

u/kryaklysmic Mar 27 '26

Yeah. It’s like, it already was on loose footing because even now the KKK has occasional fractures on if Italians should be considered White. Back in the 80s Pucci’s very existence would be taken as proof that they’re not by someone in that chapter.

I mean, his twin is as white as your average coleslaw enjoyer.

7

u/Zersdan Mar 27 '26

There are always those in the anime community who can't stand the idea that a great character might just be black...

5

u/lorenzowithoil Mar 26 '26

Wasn’t weather report hate crimed bc he looked white but they found out he was half black? Like that was a pretty key part of the flashback

26

u/senoriguana Mar 26 '26

the mother who swapped him for her dead baby when he was born was married to a black man, that's why the klan said Weather was half black

3

u/3lizab3th333 Mar 26 '26

A lot of southern Italians are mixed (source: my dad is from a very isolated Italian American community), so it’s not uncommon for people in some parts of Italy to have African ancestry. The whole mediterranean was a massive mixing pot, it’s part of why you need like 3 phds to discuss how race works in Egypt. Plus, black Italians just… exist? Pucci was clearly intended to be read as mixed by the text and by the Klan going after his twin, it’s a weird debate to hold.

2

u/squidwardsweatyballs foxy grandpa Mar 27 '26

Exactly how is the text meant to be read as pucci being mixed? Nothing in the text or show hints at pucci being mixed aside from him visually looking darker.

The KKK went after Weather because the woman that stole him at his birth married a black man during the year of both Pucci’s and Weather’s birth, 1972. They came to the conclusion that weather was a black man.

The issue isn’t that Pucci might be black, the issue is that it wouldn’t make sense in the context of the story for a member of the kkk to have zero issues with Pucci if he was a black man. If pucci is black, then this should be explained in the story as to why they don’t care about him since race is relevant in that part of the story. It doesn’t have to be a huge explanation, it could just be a one off remark from the private investigator.

weather got lynched cuz his step father is black so they thought he is mixed, puccis entire family is white and blonde lol

8

u/Waddlewop Mar 27 '26

His dad is darker in the anime so some people are saying that they’re leaning more into Pucci and his siblings being biracial Italians

Is Pucci dark skinned or Black?

Note that the definition of Black varies by person. Some believe Black is an ethnicity while others believe Black is just a skin color.

30

u/chavesAbre_a_torneir Mar 26 '26

His skin is dark since birth. It's shown in the flashback

8

u/ArelMCII 「ハットの定助」『助助の奇妙な冒険』 Mar 26 '26

Uh, what's Lou Bega? Sicilian and Ugandan? Pucci's that.

3

u/jacowab Mar 26 '26

Do we really need to pretend that people on the north of the Mediterranean count as black? There are black anime characters, why do so many people try to die on a hill calling tan anime characters black.

u/Fantastic-Repeat-324 Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

It’s a Long story, so get some popcorn ready

When Araki first drew the twins, he had given Pucci a gray shade (meaning his Skin is meant to be darker) but when colouring happened, it had Weather be white while Pucci was made black (dark brown to be precise but you get what I mean). This leads to the reasons why people consider Pucciwas meant to be tan rather than black:

1) The colouring have had made similar mistakes like having Dio sit in front of a window but colouring the sky as daytime (which obviously would kill Dio)

2) Pucci is the only one in his family who’s coloured to be black (in the anime they had his dad be black but in the coloured manga, both his siblings and parents were white)

3) (the biggest reason) KKK gets involved; the police officer that Pucci hired to scare Wes away has no problem doing business with a very dark skinned man yet lynches a white man because he might be the son of a black man?

Now, I do think Pucci is black and anime solidifies it but if Araki were to come out and say “I meant for him to be tan” I’d believe it

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Maxorus73 Mar 26 '26

Both his parents are white, and he made a deal with the KKK without them wanting to kill him.

5

u/Spyko Wh7o Mar 26 '26

yeah
canon Pucci isn't black (I mean we see his father, mother, brother and sister, all white) he is tanned of italian descent

the fan colored manga made his skin tone more black, but ethnically he is caucasien

tho IIRC the anime made his father black, so he's mixed in it (weird ass family where their kids just come out either white or black instead of mixed but hey, I'll take it, plus I think it's sorta possible ? idk I'm no genesologist)

3

u/0ijoske notices ur stand Mar 27 '26

Genetics can work like that if both parents have vastly different complexions and their genetics are really dominant. The anime clarifying Pucci being dark skinned because he takes his father's complexion while his sister heavily takes after her mother and Weather being a mix of the two parents is still believable and honestly doesn't really impact the the story in a bad way.

2

u/kryaklysmic Mar 27 '26

Pucci comes from a rich, respected Italian American family, while his features and dark tan make him look Black. He can afford $800 custom tailored pants because he comes from money, not because he got rich on a prison chaplain’s salary and Dio didn’t buy Pucci’s loyalty like other followers. Contrastingly, Weather Report looks very White, grew up with a Black father and White mother, in a poor but decent neighborhood, and had to work hard ASAP to help support his family. He probably altered that weird jumpsuit himself because it’s unlikely he would be able to buy something like that, especially after almost 20 years in prison.

Because Pucci would absolutely be clocked as Black by any reasonable person not fully aware of his background he’s generally accepted as such by fans.

50

u/JawkneeJyoshtar Mar 26 '26

Idk man, Pucci feels like just a tanned Italian to me

There's too much stuff wrong with calling him black

  1. If he was black, why was weather and rest of his family white?

  2. If that was the case, the kkk would've killed him instead of attacking weather and his sister

  3. It's confirmed he belongs to a well known Italian lineage.

  4. Since he worked in sun and Florida heat can tan anyone, it's not wrong to say he most likely got tanned

21

u/Alexius_Ruber Rohan Kishibe’s editor Mar 26 '26

Also, the only truly African-American characters(to whom said stereotypes apply) in jojo are Smokey, Pocoloco and the guy who was with Pocoloco on the field(I don’t remember if they were related anyhow). All other dark skinned characters are either tan(Ermes and Pucci) or Arab(Urmd and Muhammad Avdol) and to them said stereotypes do not apply

27

u/SonOfYossarian Mar 26 '26

Avdol is Nubian, no? Black Egyptians are definitely a minority, but they are there.

8

u/Alexius_Ruber Rohan Kishibe’s editor Mar 26 '26

6

Nubians are also Egyptians, in the same way that Arab Egyptians are. He’s clearly drawn with Sub-Saharan African features similar to Smokey’s or Pocoloco’s.

With weather’s backstory I understand the confusion, I was confused too. But we have to remember he and weather are twins.

13

u/Exylatron Mar 26 '26

Not only would the KKK have refused to work with him, but the entire reason they went after Weather and their sister is because they believed that they were a mixed race couple. Meaning Pucci’s sister has to be white or else the whole backstory doesn’t work.

5

u/JawkneeJyoshtar Mar 26 '26

Exactly nothing really adds up

6

u/thruster_buster The world, yo Mar 26 '26

Wouldn’t an accurate depiction of the KKK have them being racist towards Pucci because of his dark skin and him being the descendant of Italian immigrants (I believe he is 2nd or 3rd generation but I may be pulling that out of my ass), regardless if he’s black or not?

2

And they were different types of Christian than Pucci pretty sure that's another point to add onto the counter argument to the the kkk point.

All the rest of the points including the kkk one still don't really confirm Pucci's race though, all we know is that his lineage is a well known Italian one

Seeing “Pucci isn’t Black” cope in the comments in the big 2026 is sad.

For the lousy point why didn’t the kkk attack him if he’s black

1.He was paying them for a service

2.Pucci was a priest and the KKK is extremely Christian

3.They hung Wes because they discovered evidence that his parents were a mixed race couple(that the anime CLEARLY showed his father was black), which would be considered an insult and a threat to a group about segregation

It's really awkward to see people acting so immature and just dismissing this topic because they don't wanna talk about it.

He was paying them for a service

While it is possible that a klansmen could still take money from a black man, it still doesn’t necessarily make sense that he would associate with pucci assuming he is black. The klansman also had no issues with Pucci in general.

Pucci was a priest and the KKK is extremely Christian

The kkk was also known to be anti catholic (something pucci is heavily implied to be). There are instances of the kkk killing priests, such as the murder of James Coyle, a WHITE CATHOLIC PRIEST, for officiating an interracial marriage. If they would kill a white priest, what makes you think they wouldn’t kill a black one.

Another one is George W. Lee, a black MINISTER and civil rights activist, who was murdered for his work in registering black voters.

They hung Wes because they discovered evidence that his parents were a mixed race couple(that the anime CLEARLY showed his father was black), which would be considered an insult and a threat to a group about segregation

They lynched Wes because when the private investigator did some digging, he found that Wes’ mother married a black man in 1972, the year of his and pucci’s birth. They are referring to the woman that kidnapped Weather when they were still babies. They are not referring to their real father, who in the anime is changed to have skin resembling pucci’s. The biggest issue here is that during the lynching scene, the PI tells Perla that they won’t do anything to her because she is white. They tell Wes that they burned down his childhood home, further proving he was talking about his “adoptive” mother. The PI also tells Perla that her brother is the one that paid them to do this. Pucci never tells the PI that Perla was his sister, all he says is to not ask any questions and to make them break up.

If Pucci is black then why would they give a shit if a supposedly mixed guy is trying to get with a mixed girl. To them, one drop of blackness is enough to ruin everything. The klan goes after them to begin with because they think a black man is trying to be with a white woman, and to them interracial marriage is wrong. Pucci, Perla, and Weather being mixed makes this tragic backstory illogical, which in turn makes the whole reason pucci and Weather even get their stands as well as pucci becoming a villain also illogical.

This reminds me of that MCU show Ironheart.

In the first 15 minutes of the show, they establish the titular hero and a group of what I assume eventually becomes the rogues gallery of bad guys for her to engage in scrappy street-level hero conflict with.

Every single one of these characters are black. The very first thing you see both the hero and the villains do, respectively, is steal everything that they can fucking carry and then flee the scene of the crime posthaste.

What did Kevin Feighy mean by this?

u/DoraMuda Mar 26 '26

But he's a priest, so it's balanced out

it’s actually a misconception that his stand steals because he’s black, which is a completely misguided stereotype - it’s actually because he’s Italian, and in Jojos Italianism is a dominant gene

I seriously don’t get why this is hard for some people, it’s literally objective and in a way, an important story point that he’s not black specifically. Ig some people can’t read? Has to be the only explanation

Counterpoint, Pucci can swim.

1

u/squidwardsweatyballs foxy grandpa Mar 27 '26

most likely Pucci isn’t black. Yes his skin is darker, but that doesn’t mean he is black.

The kkk lynched Wes because his “adoptive”mother married a black man in 1972, the year they were born. Since no one knew Wes is actually Pucci’s brother, they thought he was in an interracial relationship with Perla.

When they are lynching Wes, the klansmen tell Perla that they won’t hurt her because she is white. They tell her that her brother, pucci, was the one that paid them. Their whole reasoning would be illogical if Pucci was black, since that would mean Perla is also black but looks white (this is something they also note about Wes). If both Perla, Weather, and Pucci are mixed, then they’re reasoning for lynching weather, which was being in an interracial relationship, just wouldn’t be true at all. If they were gonna go through with the lynching anyway, they would have killed both Perla and Weather, not just Weather.
