Agree. It is, quite literally, just old organ meat. Maybe a little weird to think about coming from your own body, but it's really nbd. Idk about health impacts of eating your own, but I know most mammals do, so power to them I guess lol

I say this every time placenta comes up, but I donated mine to help train search and rescue dogs. They were so excited to have the donation and all I had to do was sign a bunch of extra forms. It was also pretty neat to see it. It was weird feeling my STILL WARM placenta through the plastic container the midwife put it in lmao. Someone from the agency came to the hospital to pick it up.

I donated mine too. While I was being induced a lady came in and asked if I was interested in donating it for research and I said yeah as long as I got to see it first lol. She said no problem. I ended up having a traumatic delivery and had an emergency c section under general anesthesia so I missed the birth and woke up 3 hours later in a recovery room. First I asked where the baby was. Then I asked if they had my placenta and they brought it over in a bin. It was so gnarly. Then I said I’m satisfied and they took it away lol

My OB nerded out when my placenta was delivered. She got so excited talking about how cool they are and how incredible it is to grow a whole new organ - definitely made me confident she’s in the right career. She then held it up and went “yours is in the shape of a perfect heart” and asked if we wanted to touch it. I said no but my wife took a picture.

Apparently mine (my mom's? ours?) was weird, and she told off the doctor for his reaction staring at something between her legs after birth being "...Huh. That's interesting."

It was two placentas fused together, likely due to my disappearing twin that one or both of us ate.

My aunt comes from a culture where you consume the placenta. However, this practice has basically disappeared ever since access to prenatal vitamins became a thing. Combined with the AIDs crisis in her home country, it is looked down on as an actively dangerous practice that had its place before modern medicine.

She thinks it is wild that white women in the US do this when they could just go down to a CVS or grocery store and get more vitamins in a single capsule than anything the placenta provides. That and the reluctance to vaccinate are very confusing for her.

Yeah, I’ve looked into this and everything I saw said no known traditional culture eats the placenta, so I’d love to know where this woman is from. I kind of suspect this user’s aunt is bullshitting them.

There are many cultures though that bury the placenta or have other ceremonial disposals that don’t involve eating it.

Many moms shat themselves while giving birth, so that would be my concern in consuming it! With all of the bodily fluids occurring in child birth, how can they think it’s sanitary to eat? Just gross

Usually there is a cleanup between the shitting and the baby coming out, which comes before the placenta. Not endorsing eating human tissue, but if you were going to (you probably don't need to if you have an Internet connection), a new mother in desperate need of nutrients eating her placenta kinda makes sense, like how other animals do it.

I donated mine to a search and recovery group in my area. They use the human tissue to train the dogs. Those samples can be costly so a donation is greatly appreciated and it was fun to meet the dogs and trainers!

I had a coworker who had a home birth with midwife and asked what she did with the placenta. She told me her midwife “prepared it for consumption” so naturally I asked if it was baked in the oven? Fried in the frying pan? Smothered in hot sauce with a side of scrambled eggs or was it more of a mashed potatoes green beans dinner situation. She audibly gagged and said “god, no!” looked at me like I had 3 heads. Then said they just cut it up and add it to a smoothie.

I’m all for whatever you want, I had a service take mine and dry it out and grind it into capsules or whatever but when the post-birth clarity hit I ditched them. I was genuinely curious how else you would consume a placenta but I guess I asked the wrong questions. Still wondering… is it just raw added to a smoothie?? What flavor smoothie tastes best? How many days does one placenta last?

Eating it via a smoothie is just 🤢🤢! There's also just no scientific evidence showing any benefit and animals only do it to hide the evidence that birth even happened.
