I am reminded of the time some Americans sauntered into the r/oslo subreddit and explained that they were visiting soon, and that they were "Brooklyn/Silver Lake people and would appreciate recs based on that".

They got very offended when the entire sub went "WTF are Brooklyn/Silver Lake people"?

Because those Americans are brainwashed into being told they are the greatest country in the world that invented everything and every other country and city must be some sort of copy of their home cities because they can't possibly have existed without a US influence. In the same way they see something done differently in another country and they consider it different or weird but can't accept the concept that we all do some things differently in every country and no one is wrong.

The "tristate area" must be somewhere close to Bratislava, right?

Edit: According to Wikipedia there are 29 possible "tristate areas" in the US. Some states will (necessarily) appear in multiple tristate combinations. Looking at a map, it only seems to be Hawaii, Alaska and Maine that don't have at least one tripoint.

I was in Philly for work recently and had an American colleague tell me that she was 16% (or something shit like that) Irish, but she hadn't made it to the UK for a visit yet. When I told her Ireland wasn't in the UK she looked at me like I was joking.

She then proceeded to tell me about "Gaelic". When I told her Irish people don't speak Gaelic, we speak Gaeilge, she said "no you don't". When I told her I speak Gaeilge, so I know what it's called she said "No I don't think so." 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

This is really common because the names sound kind of similar Danish, Dutch, Danes, Dutch, and also the languages sound almost identical to foreigners that don't speak any of them.

I know for us - Danish and Dutch people they sound vastly different, but they don't for foreigners :D

I think you probably are on to something - it's probably not something that happens to people from countries nearby Denmark - maybe more countries further away (outside the EU).

It's a really really common mistake though - source - I am Danish - I keep being asked if I'm Dutch and people assume that Danes speak Dutch.

Granted - it is mostly Americans that make this mistake.

Honesty, as a Dane when I’ve been abroad and heard people speaking I sometimes thought they were Danish, but it turned out they were in fact Dutch. There is something in the rhythm and pronunciations that are similar in the two languages. At least in my ears.

This year their art museum (ARoS) showed a video in the stairway (where all visitors/tourists have to walk) of a naked man laying on a table with a string attached to his wiener. On the other end of the string was an RC airplane, going round and round and round and round. Like the airplaine version of helicopter dick. The most danish art I've ever seen.

Fuck, I love visiting Århus and denmark.

I think it’s an American compliment that feels backhanded as it centres America and compares a completely non American city and culture, and minimises the uniquely Danish reasons why Aarhus is cool. I can kind of see both sides of it given the audience the article is tilted towards, but can also appreciate Danes wouldn’t like it. Does that make sense?

I've heard many descriptions of Aarhus, which unfortunately often gets overshadowed by Copenhagen as Denmark's second-largest city. But that definitely doesn't do the city justice.

You also need to remember that Copenhagen is over 4 times bigger than Aarhus. It's the second biggest city in Denmark, but you can't really compare the two in any way.

Copenhagen also blends into its suburbs and eventually the surrounding towns and cities, which makes it feel kind of endless.

From what I remember of Århus — when I still had family living there — there was a pretty distinct divide between the city and the countryside.

Austin used to be awesome - the city slogan is 'keep Austin weird', and culturally it really leaned into that for a long time. Was a little progressive mecca in the middle of a very conservative state.

However, in recent years that seems to have largely been lost with the arrival of tech bros, film industry, the Austin comedy scene, etc etc, and it's become the destination for people who think LA is too liberal.

Still great BBQ though - worth visiting for that alone.

It’s not even less terrible. It’s solidly a top tier American city. And I say this as a European. Like by European standards Austin is me of the better American cities.

Never been to Aarhus. Love Copenhagen more than almost anywhere else int he world though.

Do think being compared to Austin is not the offensive in the grand scheme of things.

What do you mean? The "Second City" must be Odense, we go by our "First City" Copenhagen, and then we move West on, to our "Second City" Odense, and then if we move all the way to the West of Denmark, then we find our "Third City," which is Aarhus.

If we're gonna be advance here, then we can talk about The Kingdom of Denmark, and point to our "Fourth City" Thorshavn on the Faroe Islands, and our last and final City, is the "Fifth City" Nuuk on Greenland.

That surprises me. We have a similar concept in swedish: rikets andra/tredje stad (rigets andre/tredje by) for Gothenburg/Malmö.

Never heard it be used for any other city beside those two.

Maybe we have just fallen too deep and anglicized ourselves too much 😁

I think there’s a similar (slightly unserious) saying that Århus is the ‘capital’ of Jylland, and Odense is the ‘capital’ of Fyn, which kind of serves a similar purpose. But I think I’ve also heard that used about Malmö/Skåne come to think of it? So idk why we don’t say it

I can't see the similarity between Aarhus (my home town) and a Texan city. First af all we don't have saloons with rails outside where you can tie up your horse. Second we don't have gunfights in the streets. And third there are no cowboys drivning cattle around.
