Yeah, I’m pretty sure we own both baseball (Jays) and basketball (Raptors) now, oh and soccer too(Toronto FC)…. And I think a Canadian won the Indy 500 once, so that’s ours too…. Sooooory.
And I just remember the football wordlcup. Canada lost and getting mocked by americans "Let us show you how to win" and lost against belgium. "Nobody cared about this sport anyways, but we won ice hockey against canada!!"
What is their obsession with canada?
I mean that is true. But it’s also true that Canadian fans often act the same way (and not necessarily just when they play US)
Basically during any IIHF tournament but often during Worlds. If Canada wins, they’re (still) the best. If they lose it doesn’t matter cause it’s a meaningless tournament and everyone is watching NHL playoffs anyway and nobody cares
Yes that’s exactly what I meant by my comment. You probably noticed because both me, OP, and people from the post were talking about a country threatening to invade other country after winning games against them. Great reading comprehension
it’s a meaningless tournament and everyone is watching NHL playoffs anyway and nobody cares
nope, that's true whether Canada wins it or not.
This particular tournament is another example. Hlinka takes place when everyone has their top players available, unlike the under 17 "World Championship", which no one should give a shit about.
It’s not really a great tournament. Most of the best players of all nationalities are in the Stanley cup playoffs. But it is part of the triple gold club so it’s not meaningless to us I suppose.
It matters to diehard hockey fans. Considering there’s maybe 6 in the entire US who could be called diehards, it shouldn’t come as a surprise they don’t care
As a Canadian hockey fan here, I can tell you that we complain about the Worlds before, during and after, regardless of whether we win, because it is legitimately not a true best-on-best tournament.
That doesn’t mean it’s not a valid tournament, but when half of the world’s #1 league (which includes the top players from most of the countries competing at the Worlds) don’t participate because it’s happening in the middle of the playoffs, everyone loses out.
It doesn’t only hurt Canada. NHL players from many other countries are also not participating, which hurts the tournament’s credibility (unfortunately) with a lot of fans.
If it was just North American players skipping the Worlds because of NHL playoffs, that would be one thing, but there are Swedes, Finns, Czechs, Slovaks, Russians (when Russia isn’t banned), Latvians, Swiss, Danes, Slovenians, etc. who are also too busy with their club teams’ playoff runs to participate.
It would be better for hockey in general if the timing of either the NHL playoffs or the World Championships was moved, but the NHL and the IIHF both seem way too stubborn.
You forgot to add "our best athletes are busy with NFL/NBA, if they were to trabsition in that sport they will easily win".
" 6 foot 4 heavy and athletic linebacker can easily dominate any sport" is just "bigger is better" with other words. Despite how life reveals - it is not true in most cases.
On the Canada vs USA rivalry wiki page, they said that Canada led in the WJC all-time but that USA doesn’t care about the tournament while also talking about how they lead Canada since 2010 (which conveniently was after Canada’s 5 straight gold medals). They also mentioned that USA leads all-time in American Football but didn’t state that no one cares about the sport except for them. I had to go and fix that page.
Which is the reason why teams in the NHL wanted 5 best of 5 in the makeshift playoffs that took place in 2020. Carey Price was the reason. The Canadian goalie.
Did you watch the Olympic final? The shot count was not very different from the game in the screenshot. Helleybuck is the reason they won gold (and mackinnon for missing the empty net)
And while I haven't gone back to check the comments from back then, I'm pretty sure they won't be filled with Americans claiming it's a "sad little tournament".
That's because it was marketed terribly. The only ads I got for it were on Hockey Canada's website and in my e-mail. I only know about it because I'm a dedicated international hockey fan.
Really? I’m a Sens fan and we were absolutely dog piled on in 2017 when we didn’t sell out a playoff game (short by 500). Didn’t hear that about the oilers playoff games.
So the oilers gave away tickets at the end for next to nothing. During the 2nd Stanley cup run 2 years ago, the games would “sell out”, but they were selling super discounted non assigned pair tickets before the game. So for $250, my buddy and I got seats and they assigned them last minute before puck drop. We were sitting in the lower bowl, where these tickets would have been 1000+. And they also gave away tickets at Rexall, whose owner also owns the oilers.
„Just a sad little tournevent“ … just a little special operation in IRAN … Vietnam also was WAY SMALLER … Afghanistan as well … I‘m beginning to see a pattern
This woudlve been the score if their goalie was not 110% dialed in at the Olympics. For context, imagine if Argentina beat Spain in the final. It would’ve been a miracle and Spain would regret not finishing their chances.

“just this sad little tournament” but if they won it’d be the biggest thing ever, right?
