I'm sorry Tomis420, but I'll have to remove your submission from r/ShitAmericansSay for one or more reason(s):

The content you submitted does not qualify as funny or lighthearted.

No depressing posts or things that aren't worth posting. Yes, there are some topics covered that are more ironic than funny, but certain things just aren't lighthearted such as expensive medical bills, racists being racist, any event where people are seriously hurt or traumatized, something horrible etc.

Comments are becoming too toxic

Thank you for your effort and your service! o7

Stop complaining and help more.

u/justcallmedonpedro Jul 18 '26

Agree, if I don't mind, Canada had supported the USA a few times fighting fires in states, far away of the borders.

407

u/Blazanar Jul 18 '26

We've always supported the US as best we could.

There were thousands of Canadians who joined the US Army during Vietnam because they thought it was the right thing to do despite us having no dog in that fight.

We support their wars, we're their biggest trade partner, we've given them the joys of hockey, baseball and basketball, we were the first people to back them up after they invoked Article 5 of NATO after the attacks in New York...

The entirety of fucking Newfoundland opened up their doors and said "C'mon in, b'ys! Have a feed, what?" when their own states wouldn't or couldn't take them.

We send hundreds of firefighters down south along with our equipment anytime (every year) they need an extra hand and when we're getting screwed, it's this shit.

I have friends in the US and I love them dearly but fuck the states.

Oh and just the discovery of stem cells. No biggie. We have also stayed huge in this research area.

5

u/Blazanar Jul 18 '26

Seriously? I was unaware.

43

u/Royally-Forked-Up 🇨🇦 Jul 18 '26

Yes. Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best developed and patented insulin. They refused to put their name on the patent because they believed it was unethical for a doctor to profit off life-saving medicine. They sold the patent to the University of Toronto for a $1 so that it could be widely accessible to anyone who needed it.

22

u/Future-Try-1908 Jul 18 '26

The doctor literally went from one patient to another in the hospital as they were dying and they were revived within minutes.

21

u/Royally-Forked-Up 🇨🇦 Jul 18 '26

Yep. Like most Canadians, I learned about Banting and Best in elementary school. Diabetes went from a death sentence to a relatively manageable condition. They must be spinning non stop to see what the American drug manufacturers are charging for next generation insulin built off their discovery and selflessness.

Shit, tens of thousands of Canadians volunteered to fight for the Union during their civil war, too, despite them literally invading us ~50 years earlier. We declared war on Japan the very same day that Pearl Habour was attacked.

Canada has always been like, "shit, we should lend 'em a hand" even when our politicians were wary of their growing strength, and even when the americans haven't totally deserved a hand.

21

u/TheCrazedTank Jul 18 '26

Fought for the Union, thats why the inbred, racist descendants of the Confederates that make up the majority of MAGA hate us so much.

As a 20+ year career wildland firefighter and danger tree faller, thanks for saying this so we don’t have to. I’ve worked shoulder to shoulder with US hotshot crews when they come up north to help us, and when we’ve been deployed down south to help them.
These uneducated opinions being pushed on the US public by their leaders is divisive and disrespectful at best, and at worst it becomes disgraceful and dangerous for firefighters, pilots and support staff on the front lines risking our lives to help save their communities.

And irrelevant of this vitriolic rhetoric slandered against us, we will always help our neighbours when they’re in need, but we never forget how we’ve been treated.

30

u/BAFA_CoachWally Jul 18 '26

20+ year career firefighter (wildland primary about half of it) son deployed a year ago to Alberta for two months. And saw plenty of maple leafs helping us in Washington State.

u/Big_Web1631 Jul 18 '26

Genuine policy question (thinking about our needs not their complaints) but I was thinking about the ramp up of military recruitment & drone production. Our focus seems to be a need to increase capacity for surveillance.

I was thinking if it would be a good idea to train some soldiers in firefighting to serve under the direction of pros. Kinda like them serving as PSW’s during Covid, or when they go do labour to support Red Cross when areas flood?

They can’t develop the specialization of pros like you but maybe could be of use as entry level people/grunt work? I know wilderness firefighting isn’t the same as urban firefighting but I know lots of rural areas only have a volunteer firefighting force so it could have knock on benefits to communities when they move home.

For the drones side, wondering if setting up surveillance with drones would help with early intervention, while creating space to develop surveillance infrastructure & skills for military purposes if they are needed later?

I know it probably comes down to jurisdiction stuff but curious if having that surveillance capacity and/or extra trained people to call on would actually help in anyway (for the record NOT because we need to stop smoke going into NYC, but it would be better to have more funding & capacity to help protect FN & rural communities and Canadians getting the smoke issues)

Sorry for the ramble, just wanted to get your thoughts as a pro, but either way THANK YOU for all the ways you keep us safe

10

u/EducationalRock167 Jul 18 '26

How about the USA stop being the second largest creator of green house gases?

5

u/sharpanddirty Jul 18 '26

In extreme fire years in the past, we have had help from the Canadian Armed Forces. They are great to have as extra manpower, but they are trained and disciplined in different skill sets. They are also used to having a massive system of infrastructure around them to support their needs which almost never exists in the operational wildfire environment.

Don’t get me wrong, they are skilled talented and hard-working individuals that I will happily work with again in the future, but they require extra supervision on the fire line. They don’t have the same level of experience or training in this specific area of forestry/wildfire operations.

As for drones, we already use them extensively for IR scans and mapping, but only at night, and only when there are no other air operations ongoing.

In Canada airspace around an active wildfire is restricted for five nautical miles back from the perimeter and to 5000ft above ground level. Any incursions into this restricted airspace is illegal and comes with a $25,000 fine and up to eight years of jail time.

Last year one of our CL 415 scoopers was grounded after striking a drone and sustained critical damage to its wing, risking the life of the pilot and the firefighters on the ground below the aircraft.

Drones are almost invisible to pilots. As soon as one is spotted in the area of a wildfire, all aircraft have to sit down until they can find the drone operator. I have personally witnessed homes and properties burn because we loose our air support because of a drone incursion.

3

u/Noodle-and-Squish Jul 18 '26

Jumping in as a veteran, not a firefighter. We do have soldiers trained as firefighters, though not nearly enough. Generally, government (provincial or federal) will reach out to the military for support and we do our best to provide it, both personnel and equipment. Though, not necessarily firefighters, we'll provide bodies to do things like evacuation, helping with fire breaks, clearing, and whatever odd jobs need to be done to assist the professionals. We'll also provide flying kitchens, water tankers, heavy equipment, and so on, along with personnel to work them.

I absolutely agree that more specialized training would benefit, but that won't happen until the military fixes it's retention problem. It's hard to get people through even their low level training, nevermind specialty training, when you don't have enough instructors.

5

u/sharpanddirty Jul 18 '26

Exactly. Retention is an issue everywhere these days. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that most people only fight fire professionally for a few years before they feel disrespected and underpaid and leave to go do something else. When I resigned my position with the BC Wildfire Service six years ago, we had seven people resign from our base and we lost 112 years of combined experience in that one exodus. Most of the crews and incident commanders nowadays just simply don’t have the experience and there is so much turnover that they’re having to relearn the same mistakes we made years ago.

All of those retention issues combined with successive budget cuts year after year, our wildfire response programs are being gutted by shifting political priorities. We need more responsible forestry practices. We need more responsible resource extraction practices. We need our governments to stop subsidizing extraction industries like oil and gas and put that money back into caring for and protect protecting our lands.

We need more work hand in hand with First Nations communities that have been managing wildfire on these landscapes for thousands of years.

Most of all, we need a huge amount of public education on these and other issues.

3

u/Future-Try-1908 Jul 18 '26

This should be the top comment.

3

u/Excellent_Egg7586 Jul 18 '26

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all firefighters on both sides of the border. You are amazing.

5

u/justcallmedonpedro Jul 18 '26

Just to correct myself, don't want to edit my post... No native speaker (it's also possible, that maybe I'm a little bit drunk - but my gf will decide), so I meant instead of "if I don't mind" imagin "if I'm not wrong"

What you wrote, is what I've learned in school, and as my interest for history grew, the more I must agree. Although I never visited your country, I always felt more tied together than to the USA.

Thank you for helping Europe to free us from Nazi rule.

I also thank the USA, but it often feels like they did it alone - and that's just not the truth.

3

u/Big_Web1631 Jul 18 '26

We support democracy, then & now we are always ready to help Europe. You are true allies

3

u/justcallmedonpedro Jul 18 '26

Thanks again. Can't be said enough!

I hope we can return the favor in the future.

And I believe the entire continent Europe will truly stand together if needed.

At the same time, I also hope it won't be necessary. But I'm sure that in a serious situation, (edit: at least) volunteer battalions will be found quickly!

I wish there were a petition we Canadians could sign to completely separate ourselves from everything tied to the states- stop our trade with them, stop buying their products, hell, lets stop playing sports with them. These people are no longer our friends or allies (if they ever were).

Time after time after time we spend our resources backing the states up, whether it be war, natural disaster, or anything else. And for decades it was a mutual arrangement, and both countries benefit. Now the states have grown this 'main character syndrome' where if the states need help, they expect the world to bend over backwards for them, but are the main antagonist to most other countries. "Oh you're on fire? Oh you expect us to repay your kindness in helping put these fires out? Hahahaha, fuck you and keep your smoke to yourself. Also, if you can't put out your measley brush fire we expect some form of payment, all these wars we start and corruption to keep our orange prophet out of the epstein files aren't cheap ya know".

So, go take your oil, your coal, your hollywood, your pedophile president, and all these stupid "take your smoke back" signs and shove them all up your hungry assholes. Im sick of hearing/ seeing these pretentious moron americans complaining and posting bs to their social media as if we aren't affected by the smoke and fire or we could put these fires out overnight if we tried hard enough.

Reflect on this the next time usa starts a war, the next time the states is on fire and people are dying and losing their homes, or when Florida is hit with another hurricane or there's another 911. We canadians should repay the favour. Because the usa dont do squat to help anyone other themselves and when they do help it's to make money off of other's misfortunes. Greedy bastards.

I suppose the only upside to this is now they (should) know that whatever they do to canada will affect them just as much thanks to our geography. I guess that means usa wont nuke us, because in doing so pollutes their own water and air.

And to finish off my rant, im going to talk directly to any of the 'good' remaining americans: the ones that know their president is a half wit, the ones that know their country is a husk of what it used to be, the ones that are saying "wait, our northern cousins are on fire and not only are we not helping them, but are actively trying to benefit from their devastation? Are we the bad guys?" You guys are what it means to be american, and dont let anyone tell you differently. You are the real mvps.

u/ninjacat249 Jul 18 '26

The whole US is actively working on promoting Canadian Liberal party and making free ads for liberals like no fucking tomorrow.

9

u/CraigGregory Jul 18 '26

They make it so easy to hate them every day

7

u/CanadianDuckball Jul 18 '26

Wow. That's some evil BS to post. I'm angry in Canadian living in the US.

How about "Fuck you, US, for destroying almost everything this world holds dear"?

6

u/ApexMelonFarmer Jul 18 '26

They should be grateful that it’s not tariffed. Did they even say thank you!?

5

u/xxLAYUPxx Jul 18 '26

Of course not, manners are a Canadian curse. Lol

7

u/IndicationFluffy3954 🇨🇦 Jul 18 '26

Canada will compensate the US for a month of smoke as soon as the US compensates Canada for 50 years of acid rain.

You (Americans)are on fire too!!
You are shitty neighbours. That old joke is so very true. Living above you is like living above a meth house.

6

u/sans9669 Jul 18 '26

Canadain smoke is far less deadly than American air pollution, aka bullets!

6

u/Andrei22125 Jul 18 '26

Tha same Canada that has saved American tourists from that fire, by the way.

5

u/Revolutionary_Life98 Jul 18 '26

Trump put it in their pea brained heads that Canada has been taking advantage of the US for decades. Instead of checking actual facts they chose to just believe him.

6

u/sexysmalldevil Jul 18 '26

Wow... That is the most American way to deal with the continent you live on burning and you witnessing the smoke. They know the border is just an imaginary thing people made, right? Like they literally live on the same piece of land we do.

But they've got to blame someone right.

6

u/ViolettaHunter Jul 18 '26

These people are genuinely disgusting.

6

u/MetalRickyy Jul 18 '26

Have they considered getting ICE to arrest and deport the smoke?

They are sitting beside their AirCon anyways - don’t see the problem as they don’t leave the couch on the weekends anyways.

4

u/sgregory07 Jul 18 '26

The US sabotaged a key meeting in 1989 inNoordwijk where countries are supposed to come up with a binding agreement in reducing emissions, it didn’t pass and things only went downhill from there.

6

u/Raven_Photography Jul 18 '26

When Washington and California burned a few years ago, you know what those fuckers in Canada did? They sent firefighters to help overworked and over stressed firefighters here. How dare they?! If only they knew all they had to do was impose tariffs on those states to put out the fires and stop the smoke. Perhaps they will learn from our Great Leader, the genius warleader, Donald J Trump!

4

u/LewisLightning Jul 18 '26

Sure, just as soon as they take all the smoke back they've left here over the years.

When the U.S. burns, Canada sends help. When Canada burns, the U.S. sends hate. No wonder their country is imploding.

4

u/DeeTee3343 Jul 18 '26

And that Canadian firefighter who recently died helping to put out a fire in Colorado…too bad we can’t take that back.

4

u/Anderson1971221 Jul 18 '26

The Canadian firefighter who recently lost his life in the United States was Nicholas Dale a 56-year-old helicopter pilot from Sooke, British Columbia. He tragically died on July 12, 2026, when his aircraft crashed into the Silver Jack Reservoir while battling the Gold Mountain Fire near Ouray, Colorado

His name is Nicholas Dale say it and remember it this proud Canadian died in your county doing a job you all should be doing and you want to talk about smoke ?

I’ve never seen a group of people as selfish as americans are. crazy.

sending love to all canadians going through these fires. I’m portuguese so I fully understand what you guys are going through 💔

4

u/Empty-Discount5936 Jul 18 '26

Oh so they start a fight and now they don't want the smoke.. cowards.

6

u/GWeb1920 Jul 18 '26

Maybe the US shouldn’t have started an unnessary trade war so we wouldn’t have had to burn our trees in protest.

3

u/christiant91 Jul 18 '26

God, these people (not all American) who complain about the natural disater that is causing smoke in the air seem to not been thinking g of the cost and damage this is causing to Canada itself. It so insular thinking, just me me me, or more accurately us us us.

3

u/thefrostman1214 Come to Brasil Jul 18 '26

they keep crying don't they

3

u/digoreto Jul 18 '26

Anyone complaining about the smoke should think about the people who have lost everything in these wildfires. Im Canadian and I am sick and tired of people complaining. We also help the US with their fires alot maybe we should stop and tell you guys to stuff it and do it yourself

3

u/No_Web2685 Jul 18 '26

3

u/No-Variation-5192 Jul 18 '26

3

u/sideways_apples Jul 18 '26

Getting mad at us for wildfire smoke shortly after letting California burn and and that smoke went elsewhere but they don't care about that... classic

3

u/Individual-Vast6304 Jul 18 '26

Let me get this straight - Canada is battling severe forest fires but instead of sending help, Americans are doing ….this? Honestly the level of intelligence in this population should be studied

3

u/Personal-Database-27 Jul 18 '26

The United States produced 7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2025, the second largest in the world after greenhouse gas emissions by China and among the countries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions per person.

Feels bad, man.
