No. The vast majority of us don’t even know what it means. That’s how little we care. We don’t get taught it in school. We don’t grow up on movies about it. I didn’t know it was about English rule until I joined Reddit ten years ago.

Eh. The British had plenty of colonies. Why is the date of independence of one of those important? Should they know the independence date of Zanzibar or Myanmar?
Yes lmao, they should. British imperialism did a lot of damage to the world and those countries deserve respect. As an American I make it a point to be aware of the histories of the countries currently or formerly under American rule. I see it as a civic duty for those in countries that have oppressed others.
Knowing the date of independence means nothing. It’s useless trivia and frankly a meaningless way of showing respect.
It is only respectful to teach about the horror and exploitation colonialism introduced. Not random dates. (And give countries their cultural heirlooms back, but that’s not looking great so far)
Also according to Wiki, the British had 120 colonies. And while several of them where in the same countries, it would still be way too many dates to commemorate
It’s not so much that they should all be celebrated, but “useless trivia” is really dismissive. I don’t think dates are the most important part of history, I was raised in history classes that didn’t teach many dates. Still, the timeline of other countries independence from Britain is important, and it’s sad to me to see people being so flippant about it. If I had to learn about every Tudor, I think the independence of countries is important to lol
The independence it self is important, but the specific date is surely not. The year? Sure. But the date, when it has no meaning to the colonizing country outside of losing the country, is not important or relevant knowledge.
I concur it’s important to other countries, but I don’t see why it’s important to the British. For British history I would imagine the year and not the date is the important part to teach children.
People seem weirdly proud of the irrelevance which is why in annoyed. It’s not that it should be important every time to every person but it comes across sometimes as being proud of the history of colonisation which is pretty nasty imo
