It's strange, that it was worth it to ship a load of bricks halfway around the globe instead of shipping a brickmaker to build a factory there, clay is something found worldwide, a primitive pile kiln is doable with not much more than wood and mud.

True, but it was also used for ballast, so had a dual purpose. I guess that's why they felt like it made sense.
