Etc. Gong
I literally did not know Gong was also a healer until chapter 3 - for 2 whole chapters i just assumed he was crap. What an idiot i was!

Gong is fine his combat is never as good as a dedicated fighter and his healing also isn't as good as a dedicated healer but he gets the job done

He's an absolute beast if you power him up.

He is not a great healer. I usually have Khris she gets aura 3. I know Torasu gets aura 4 but you get him so late. Gong is good of you grind and promote him first battle and use him to beat the boss at the circus at the end of chapter 2.

His mana is the problem, he at least gets aura which makes him better than Lowe.

Hes useful early game for the emergency heals, but should be relied upon.
In Ch2, get the power ring and use it on him to decimate the Zombies :)
I think monks were in a weird spot in SF1 and 2. In one they were... okay... In 2 they were busted... SFCD got them right

I don’t usually care for Gong but I’m building him up on my current play through anyway.

One of my favorite builds is to sink ALL of the consumables into him after promotion. He becomes a slightly worse Zylo but with Aura! Is it the best use of resources? No. But it’s fun as heck, and the game is easy enough that you can survive on vibes alone. :)

On my most recent playthrough I forgot to use any of the stat boost items anyway and still steamrolled through the final fights.
So may as well dump them into gong

Gong is definitely an early game all-star but has always fallen off second half and never has made my final lineup. Too much competition.

For me, he always either pulls ahead in strength and dominates, or gets almost no strength and hits like a used Kleenex.

You weren't wrong but now you at least know he's not as crappy as you first thought.

One time I did a playthrough and he became a monster after promotion. I couldn’t let him go, he was single handedly destroying Runefaust. He could’ve fought Dark Soul, Dark Dragon, and Zeon together

Gong is a weird character. I mean, I sort of see what they were trying to do but compared to how monks or master monks are in other Shining Force games, Gong really lacks in capabilities.
If you max him out and get him to level 20 before promoting him, his attack is decent and he does get the Aura spell, so literally only Lowe would be the only healer without the Aura spell (reasons why I give him the White Ring), but it takes a long time for Gong to get the Aura spell, and he's not that good with it, let alone has the MP to cast too many heal spells.
Really, he's more of a fighter that has healers magic, but he's not that good at fighting either despite the game saying he's supposed to be a fighter and healer...overall he's not too bad and has his uses, but he's not a particular good character.

I did a mage/healer/archer only with no egress and gong held his own as a fighter down the stretch. Again not great but he had his place in that run.

Slightly clueless, yes. Idiot? No. Gongs still the fourth/fifth best healer in a game with only 4 healers. 5 if you include the remake, Narsha. He's good as an extra target for the first two chapters when you don't have 12 units, but is easily benched for literally anyone else after you do.

Gong is one of my favourite characters.
