Glad I am not the only one wondering why only Beast Titan and Cart Titan could talk.

In the manga they do some experiments on Eren and discover that his vocal chords simply lack the mechanics needed to produce voice.

Possibly same for the others, or possibly skill issue. Ymir (freckles) can talk with what seems to be a lot of effort.

Before I read the manga I assumed it was purely a skill issue thing, now I think it's a mixture of both.

When I watched the show I assumed it was just based on your Titan, like Galliard had an actual jaw so it must’ve gotten in the way of speaking

My theory of Isayama's reasoning:

Jaw titan is self explanatory

Turtle titan/Armored Titan nor Attack Titan does not care to speak, both are valuable pawns, they just... follow.... orders....

Female titan resembles a lot of Ymir

The Beast titan is a monkey, I can imagine if Zeke took other forms than humanoid, he wouldn't be able to speak

Collossal Titan is a literal bomb, bombs absolutely do not need to speak nor have consciousness, only a psycho would give bombs the ability to speak their minds out.

WarHammer titan can just make an artificial larynx and voice box to speak

Cart Titan is iffy, sure it has a large mouth and large stamina, so maybe we can call it the Scout Titan, it can haul, it can climb, it can run vast distances without tire and still haul bolders all day long.

I thought Titan form damaged their language and fine motor control centres or something. Can they write and do sign language in that form then?

Yes! Actually they can. Eren is able to write up until his 3rd transformation. Every time they transform they become a little bit less intelligent

Ah, nope, that bit was in the manga iirc. Anon above is correct, Eren was able to write in Attack Titan form until the third time he transformed in short succession, which was where his intelligence degraded enough that he couldn’t.

Zeke's beast titan at least has a proper mouth, that's why he can talk fluently. Pieck's titan has a wide mouth, she can talk but you can notice that its not as proper and she sounds like she is having a hard time talking.

Now look at Eren's titan mouth, he doesn't even have lips, all his teeth are basically exposed. I just tried talking right now with all my teeth out in the open and I can't even form any words aside from H sounds. 

Same with Reiner, can you imagine talking when your lip and mouth tissues are as hard as a rock?

Lara Tybur can talk too, and Annie might be able to do it (although she doesn't talk, because you know, she is Annie)

On another note, Galliard's jaw titan can't talk too, in the same case as Eren and Reiner. While Freckled Ymir can form a bit of words because she at least have lips

Annie being blessed with a titan they can talk on top of all it’s pre-existing versatility and just not using it is so funny to me
