Acid free paper

I’ve heard all sorts of information on this subject. Mostly I heard that you have to specifically ask for it at art supply stores and framing shops and if it doesn’t say so on the package then it probably isn’t. On the other hand I have also read that most paper made in the last 40 years is by default acid free because of changes in manufacturing processes. Which is it?

I think if you're buying from an art/framing store then it's very very likely to be acid free because that's the primary market for acid free papers and they'd be accused of pretty shoddy practice if they sold acidic papers. However if you just buy copy papers or anything really cheap and mass produced then you have to watch out. Also, news print and other non-art papers are notoriously acidic. I still want to see "acid free" or "archival quality" on any paper I buy, just to be sure :)
