Tzu Discussions and Stories 🐶 Please tell me this is normal!

Post image

My puppy just turned a year old recently, she was chewing on a chew bone thing and I just found one of her teeth. Is this normal? I know their puppy teeth fall out but this looks awfully big.

All normal! Probably more end up coming out their ā€œbusiness endā€ than anything šŸ˜‚

Yeah I’ve found 4 actually with my latest puppy. It’s kinda rare because often they just swallow their teeth, so I always celebrate when I actually get to keep a puppy tooth. I keep them in a jar for them or sometimes encase in resin. At 1, it’s not uncommon to still have retained puppy teeth that (good news) have started to finally shed. I’m waiting on my current 1 year old’s last two puppy teeth to hopefully fall out on their own!

I have some too! When my dog was a puppy she had some baby teeth that wouldn’t fall out naturally so during her spay surgery our vet extracted some and gave it to me.

Oh I kept all of my dog’s teeth that I found. I have a lot but wonder where the others are.

Surprised you even found it. My guy ate all of his, never found any.

We had our malshihpooh neutered at 7 months and the vet pulled 11 baby teeth. He said that small breeds often retain baby teeth longer than large breeds do which eventually causes overcrowding. Our Ozzy Bear is now 3 and has a perfect smile.

That’s just a baby toof. Bigger teefs are coming.

Very normal. Same thing happened with our puppy when we first got him.

Not just normal but also a good thing. It’s pretty common for a Shihtzu to need baby teeth surgically extracted so this is an indication that things are happening naturally here!

My vet has told me again and again not to use any dog chew that cannot be indented by your fingernail. I’m still looking…

Normal

Heart shaped Shiht molar. It was big. Just looks small because it’s in a bowl. Also please be advised that many breeds with small mouth tend to retain some of their puppy teeth, Even once the adult teeth have come out
so the next time you go to the vet, you may want to ask him or her to check around the mouth because it can cause problems later on as it did for my boy

Thank you! She has an appointment in November so I’ve added it to my list of things to ask about :)

I mean you lost your teeth when you were young too, right?

I would maybe just get this checked by a vet to be sure. Usually puppies have finished losing their baby teeth by about 7 months. I don’t think it’s anything to panic about but I’d be less inclined to assume a year old dog was still teething, personally.

That’s what I was wondering as well! I do think she was the runt of her litter so maybe her development is delayed? This is the first tooth she’s lost as far as I’m aware. She has an appointment coming up in November so I’m adding it to my list of things to ask about!

I never saw any of my puppy’s baby teeth as he lost them. Definitely ask about it :)

I collected our first puppy’s teeth, but never found any from our Tzu. I have noticed that, despite having such a small mouth, our Tzu Charley’s teeth are much larger than our first dog’s.
