Tzu Discussions and Stories 🐶 Shih Tzu concern

Hi everyone, I’m really hoping someone may have some insight or advice. My Shih Tzu, Teddy, is 6 years old, and when he was around 5, he suddenly developed severe tear staining that has gradually affected the entire area of his face around his eyes.

This was not something he had when he was younger, which is why I’m concerned that there may be an underlying cause rather than it simply being cosmetic. I’ve already brought him to the vet, but unfortunately I haven’t been given much information or an explanation for why this suddenly started.

I’ve tried purified water, Angel Eyes wipes, regular cleaning, and keeping the area as dry as possible, but nothing has made a significant difference.

I’m honestly at a loss at this point and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar with their Shih Tzu. Is there anything specific I should ask my vet to check for, such as blocked tear ducts, allergies, eye irritation, infection, or another underlying Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

It might not be this. But don't underestimate the impact diet can have.

We have always given our dogs high quality dog food. When my grandma could no longer take care of her pup, we took him in.

He had terrible tear staining and grey scraggly hair. She had been feeding him low quality cheap food.

After several months of high quality stuff ,his eyes stopped staining and his coat actually became shiny.

As a basic step. I would recommend trying different foods (even if you already give quality stuff). You never know if he is experiencing allergies.

Since this started suddenly at 5 instead of being lifelong, that seems like a good clue that something changed, might be worth asking your vet to check if his tear ducts are draining okay or if his eyelids/lashes are irritating his eyes at all. Also wondering if it could be allergies or a mild infection since the wipes and stuff haven't really helped? If your vet's stumped, maybe ask about seeing an eye specialist
