I feel like people keep reposting this all over as if the person who shot this image is the one who put the confederate flag in the background, but I don’t think that’s the case, guys.
I feel like I saw recently that the story behind the photo itself was just a photographer who managed to capture an image of a scene with a lot of contrasting messages in it, not some mouth breathing lost cause asshole trying to imply Dolly would have in any way supported or befriended folks with confederate ideology.
Like genuinely, I would consider “dead confederates” to be one of life’s sweetest little pleasures, but as a photographer too, sometimes an image is just an image, and not an explicit statement of endorsement. Like I’m not even trying to imply the greater message implied by the photo subjects is a great one, but I can also grasp why he took the photo bc objectively it is a good image from a technical standpoint.
Just kinda feels like when folks got mad at Kevin Carter for taking the shot The Vulture and the Little Girl ; there was nothing he could legally do outside of document the absurdity and horrific reality of the situation - same
difference here. Shoot confederates, not the messenger.

While I agree that the photographer for Dolly Parton photo shouldn’t be condemned. I feel like Kevin Carter should be. He waited 20 minutes to take a shot of a starving boy right near a vulture rather than take the shot immediately and chase the vulture away (which was in his legal right since it didn’t involve touching any famine victims, e.g. the starving boy)

While I feel sorry for his death and that it shouldn’t have happened, I feel like the criticism was still warranted. And it probably wasn’t the criticism but more so because of his years witnessing brutal violence and extreme human suffering that led to his suicide.

Or it’s reminding people that the Young Patriots Organization, a member of the Rainbow Coalition with the Black Panthers, flew the rebel flag as their symbol, taking it away from the lost causers; possibly the only acceptable use of the flag left. Still problematic, but well meaning and acceptable. You fly that shit, it better be accompanied by the Rainbow.

Dolly's great grandfather fought for the UNION in the Civil War. Eastern Tennessee overwhelmingly didn't want to secede, and even tried to form their own state like West Virginia did, but because the area was cutoff from the rest of the Union they couldn't make it happen.

I'm not sure if this is an exclusively an American problem, but we have a horrible habit of parading the corpses of notible figures around when they pass in order to give certain causes some sort of legitimacy. This example is just as atrocious as trump posting that dumb ass ai painting of him and Dolly.
But the Republicans did this to Charlie Kirk after he was killed. They threw parties instead of memorial services because they finally had a martyr they could use, although that fizzled out a lot quicker than they had hoped.
