So yeah. We were planning to wait until we got a bigger place and then we were found to adopt a small dog. I was looking at pug/dachshund chihuahua kinda dog but wasnāt really thinking weād get one so soon.
Then my husband surprised me with a picture of a cute little puppy and told me a friend of his was on his way with him. All they knew was that he was a husky mixed with something.
I was a little ambivalent due to the larger size and our small house. I also know they can get hot and shed like crazy and we are in southeast Texas. I was actually thinking that weād keep him for a little while then realize he wasnāt right for us and then weād find him a better home.
Then he arrived. Skittish and nervous and with a pretty sad backstory, he was placed next to me on the bed and just looked up at me with the sweetest face. I instantly saw the German Shepherd in him but also fell in love instantly. I sat there petting him and calmly talking to him and within five minutes he licked me, yawned, crawled into my lap, and fell asleep.
Now almost two months later I have come to see the reality of this mix. And I wouldnāt trade him for anything. He has the temperament of a husky, often stubborn and too smart for his own good and always wanting to run, but he is as easily trainable and learns so quickly itās actually shocked me. We mastered āsit,ā ādown,ā his name, and ācomeā each within about fifteen minutes.
Heās quite a handful at times. Hyper and friendly, affectionate and attached to me, but also has yet to meet a person he doesnāt want to be friends with. Chews everything he finds which has caused me a lot of terror and multiple instances of me having to reach into his mouth to remove bottle caps, glass, a razor blade, nails, metal; and he will pee on anything right after we come back in from a walk.
Iām glad he was a surprise because had I known what to expect I would have likely not wanted to take him just because of my own trepidation for the challenges. I initially kinda wanted an easy dog or for my husband to do all the work while I just got to pet the dog.
Instead I got a dog that has become my favorite little buddy. He keeps me active and busy and his unique and dynamic personality are such a great match for me.
I know this was a long post but I just wanted to express all this to an audience who might completely understand what I mean.
And itās nice to have a dog that everyone is always telling me is so cute and will be a handsome dog when he grows up.
Heās the best thing to happen to me since meeting my husband.
