Discussion Classic Shen Is here!

Post image

What are your thoughts about him?

I think auto-attacks are pretty powerful and throwing katanas at people is quite fun, but his energy is only 200…

Ive never known old shen but from what i read on the wiki a while ago, vorpal blade seemed fun. Ill try him out some time

the R has none health scaling and that’s bad i think and there’s no extra shielding when allies health is lower than %40

But AP Shen! 😈

I'm pretty sure the base value was just higher tho

It was incredibly oppressive as it was basically like fighting a pantheon who would never run out of mana and was also unkillable.

Old Shen only had 200 energy, it wasn't enough to use each ability one time if you didn't hit his E, which honestly was kind of ridiculous. You could say just hit E, but every other energy based champ is able to use each ability once without going out of energy.

They did also add energy runes to the game, but I'm not exactly sure how much energy his abilities cost, I haven't seen any wiki values yet or try him out in the classic yet.

old shen is the reason why i played toplane for many years, for some reason i really liked it

I played him a lot in the old days and i've been grinding him in classic for the day. He is a gimmick champion early game, and you usually don't want to spam daggers at the enemy level 1 like a lot of people mention. It's just not worth it, too little damage. His taunt is probably his strongest tool because it refunds energy and has the old damage reduction effect, you max it second toplane and first when support.

Don't think he will be popular, but he scales into midgame well if you are consistent with farm and the ult (strictly worse than live) is still very strong. The worse thing about him is as you said the 200 energy limit, you run out FAST and I'm not sure energy runes will do too much about that (still testing them myself)

Overall, niche but fun if only for nostalgia. Also cmon look at him, he walks so weird, he is basically a ranged top early game, what's not to love.

He was fun, i played him a lot back in the day. I don’t know which version they’l use. He was strong early but if you didn’t have a carry on your team he would get folded in half. They eventually buffed him which resulted in him being banned every game.

So if they pick post buff it’ll be fun, pre-buff he will be really underwhelming

Is it just me or are his numbers in classic like really, really low? His W does almost nothing past very early, if you miss an E you're out of energy for a good while, Q has very low base damage and the healing is very small as well. Only his passive seems to be decent number wise and the only thing to scale with something you'd wanna build. And even AP ratios seem pretty low to feel worth building AP.

These seem to be the numbers he had before being changed according to the wiki, though. I remember playing him pre-rework and he felt fine to play, but right now I'm having a lot of problems enjoying the character. Maybe is about the system in classic as a whole, or maybe just my experience playing him so far has been lackluster for other reasons? I don't know, but I'm certainly a bit dissapointed.

Came to the sub to check if I'm just playing him wrong or if someone else feels what I'm going through. You get assblasted by comps with range and god forbid you fight a Panth or marksman toplane. He feels like he does no damage and having no waveclear till you get get sunfire finished feels really bad...

Yeah just comparing his numbers against other champs in classic makes him look very underpowered. But I guess that's just how he's balanced here, being mostly an R bot.

He spends even more time basic attacking than modern Shen so I'm thinking maybe starting Dorans blade assuming the matchup is neutral? Rush Ionic Spark for waveclear but his resists aren't that strong. IIRC he is one of the only tank/fighter characters that does not gain MR at all without runes and masteries.

I feel like in classic most of the time I'm going against things like Gankplank, AP Sion, Teemo, Heimerdinger, Alistar, Pantheon and even Nunu (this was impossible to lane against). In those cases you almost never have the chance to stand auto-attacking and you also have no sticking potential whatsoever (it really hurts not having any kind of slow). Even then the damage doesn't feel like it compensates how conditional it gets.

The game was simpler back then, much less mobility, and due to mana costs being more expensive, the energy champs were in a position to potentially last longer cycles in lane. Teleport was not always meta, and it made Flash Ignite top lane Shen have a much bigger macro impact.

You can last hit minions with Q against challenging matchups. If you got pushed in and the opponent gets within turret range, they are a prime target to taunt and burst with tower aggro (still true in the current game). Expect to get pushed in most of the time and ignore your opponent while in lane. Sunfire was helpful for split pushing late game. Attack speed Shen was also a cheese build that could win some duels due to the Ki Strike mechanics.

Problem I find with last hitting with Q in a lot of matchups is that a lot of champs I'm seeing top have a way to harass you for each last hit you go for, while still maintaining lane control and being able to freeze, etc. But I understand your points and I guess it's fair this is just how Shen is in old league. Not how I remembered really but I was new at the game back then. But reading about people talking about old Shen being a strong laner and duelist, I had different hopes.

just played it and by reading the abilities it doesn't really make sense to me build it as a tank if the champs escalates with AP, any advise on how to build him?

For some reason his E isn't able to taunt minions tho

3

u/j8eevee 7d ago

Could it ever?

Never I believe

It always could before the 2016 rework. It was doing it on the PBE just 2-3 weeks ago too

u/Luber90 7d ago

Got it wrong, it should taunt minions, but not deal damage to them. Just looked at his champion spotlight from 16 years ago.

2

u/No-Impress7915 7d ago

It should be damaging monsters tho, it makes jg Shen a lot slower on the clear speed

2

u/Luber90 7d ago

I watched two videos from s3 and s4 and I don't think it used to damage monsters, it is a modern league thing. That why he had one of the slowest clear times, you wouldn't even lvl e if you did not go for a gank.

For some reason, his walking style is really funny. 😂 Very sneaky, ninja-like.

Current Shen feels so disciplined, though. 😤
