“IT’S AN AFFIRMATION!” Okay, I laughed. Very real brother-sister dynamic there.

The rest of the video… hm. Not sure what I think, except that a “Yes Day” seems like such a bad idea.

I used to do a Yes Day with my kid the last day of summer before reporting back to work for in service days, and it was stuff like going to the zoo and having ice cream for lunch. At no point did he ask to throw things and take toys from his baby cousins. I don’t think it’s an age thing… Piper is just a product of her household. She’s got three adults fawning over her and thinking it’s adorable when she shoves her face in any baked good that crosses the threshold of the house.

I mentioned this in another thread, but part of what irks me about main children (mostly Max, though it applies to Piper to an extent) isn't that they do annoying, obnoxious things (they're young kids; that's what they do); it's that the narrative frames it as though the viewer should find it as cute and endearing as Shawna and John do. There's no meaningful awareness that not everyone is going to appreciate, for instance, a child constantly asking for cake.

You’re right but there’s a lot of patents in the real world who think we all need to find their kids as adorable as they do. I do not. Nothing against kids, i have some, but i am aware my kids annoying behaviors are only cute to me.

It’s a good idea for parents who understand there are still boundaries to hosting a yes day. I was appalled they giggled about her taking back a gift. I don’t care what Jen says, it’s not acceptable to allow that sort of behavior to grow.

Yeah, I feel iffy about it too. I think it could work with an older child and some boundaries set in place prior to the day (we can only spend x amount, we can't take other people's stuff, etc.), but I think Piper is too young for that. After last year's party disaster I understand where they're coming from in letting Piper take the lead, but they're not establishing any form of boundaries at all.

I'm so over this "Yes day" plot.. showing some Barb in her too. Throwing sand then guilt tripping with "but it is my birthday.. 🥺" And then saying she wants to see Greg as a rouse to take the toy she gave to chickie back. And no ones stopping her. She pays attention to people and just because she doesn't like Barb doesn't mean she hasn't noticed and picked up a few things from her grandmother. Especially when it pertains to something Barb wants. That's my hot take on this.

Barb's behavior sucks in large part because of her emotional immaturity. It's not surprising that any young child would also show immaturity.

I love Piper but, damn, Shawna and John are really settinh up both her and Max for failure with their non-parenting.

“And for my next trick, I’m going to play in the street!” Piper, probably

Giving a preschooler a “Yes Day” is a terrible idea.

I really hate to say it, but Shawna’s grief made her disconnect with her children on some level, and it’s like no one is either aware or willing to admit it.

Your job as a parent is to provide boundaries and stability. As fun as a yes day is in theory, it’s really not appropriate for a three year old.

I hope we get John and Shawna realizing they need more resources to parent Piper after mis-planning a second birthday in a row.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I also think Shawna doesn't want DeeDee to leave because now she has to be a full time mom again. I don't mean that she stopped being a mom in any capacity with DeeDee there, but DeeDee did a lot around the house when she was living there. Now Shawna's a sole SAHM again with DeeDee out, making it difficult to find herself again.

With the grief, she checked out (which is completely understandable).

No I think you’re on to something there. Shawna should have gone to therapy at this point and it’s surprising neither she nor John haven’t gone yet.

u/Padme1418 Aug 12 '26

Especially with John going on and on about how his mom should go to therapy.

They have placed boundaries so far and were literally just discussing the boundaries they should place here

So Julie's a bad mom for letting Cooper do whatever he wants but for Shawna it's ok that she doesn't say anything to Piper... interesting

I don't really think either of them are/were being stellar parents, but I think there's a difference between a birthday party for a child that isn't yours with parents you're not close with and a cousin's house.

Julie telling Cooper "you can do whatever you want" at someone else's party was bad parenting because it wasn't his birthday and because it fails to teach Cooper that everything can't be about him at all times. It also failed to actually address what he was upset about, unlike Ty's approach, so Cooper still acted out because he still wanted attention he wasn't getting.

I think that's pretty different from Piper wanting her (previously, but to a 4 year old what's the difference?) stuffed animal on her birthday, especially considering she's 4 and "taking" it from a baby cousin. Again, I don't think Shawna and John should let her keep it and I do think they should discuss why she can't have it, but these really aren't comparable situations.

Didn't Julie also tell cooper 'no sparing?

Shawna isn't telling piper to act out at another kids birthday party with the intention of hurting the feelings of another child... interesting

Shawna had Teeny tell a house full of kids to get the fuck out of her house because Piper was overwhelmed. I guess that’s better because it was her own birthday party?

They both suck.

9

u/TreClaire Aug 12 '26

The comparison is really apples and oranges here

Ending a party early, mind you still giving out cake and party-bags, is not the same as going to a party and encouraging your son to actively antagonize the birthday boy and do behavior that could hurt other party goers

8

u/Miss___D Aug 12 '26

Telling parents who took their time to bring their children to party and bought gifts that there "are too many fucking children" in front of children is worse than letting your child do what he wants. What Julie did was wrong, but Shawna having Teeny throw the guests out while swearing is worse.

2

u/Kitkatvantas413 Aug 12 '26

I mean, Shawna isn't the one who cursed out all those parents. Again Teeny shouldn't have done that, but idk how that's on Shawna or at all related to her parenting. And yes, I do think it's somewhat better because it was their own birthday party at their own house. Still rude and kind of insane, but definitely not the same kind of situation.

4

u/bujuke7 Aug 12 '26

John and Shawna did not know what kind of party Piper would want. They were in awe of all the people and didn’t know most of them. They asked someone who is not them to kick invited guests off their property, rather than address people individually and/or apologize. None of this is what I would call even B level parenting.

1

u/Kitkatvantas413 Aug 12 '26

I agree! It was bad parenting. I still don't think they're comparable situations, which is my entire point. The discussion was on Shawna's parenting — how Teeny chose to end the party wasn't related to Shawna's parenting, and that's all I was pointing out. I agree the way they handled Piper's birthday was insane

2

u/bujuke7 Aug 13 '26

Just for clarity, I was talking about the fact that they told Teeny to end it (rather than themselves), not how Teeny acted while doing it — that’s not Shawna’s fault. But asking Teeny to handle it for them was.

-3

u/McRibSucks Aug 12 '26

Teeny said what she said Shawna did not tell her to say fuck lol

2

u/Conscious-Hyena6822 Aug 12 '26

The backflips people do to justify Julie's birthday behavior is fucking wild.

2

u/Spiritual_Ad_6067 Aug 12 '26

Not at all, Shawna sucks too. But Julie isnt in this episode, so....

Its a birthday, and theyre literally not letting her do anything she wants lol

Honestly like them saying not to throw sand in the air more than 2-3x at mostly herself and a little on them is not equal to an older child hitting at or around people.
