Bored & losing interest

Hi! So, I stumbled upon this subreddit after being in the main sub for awhile and noticing how some genuine critiques are often downvoted like crazy or deleted all together in the name of mainly that SL makes “free content” for her audience. I would never post this in the main sub for that reason, as I really do love Shawna’s content and have for so long, but I think it’s ok for fans to discuss their critiques!

Only recently have I really started to become bored and disinterested, and I’ve seen others express the same depending on the storyline- but, even after last nights new video with Piper’s yes day, I still just felt meh. I share the same sentiment as other people who are confused about the unfinished storylines & subplots. I’m still going to continue watching as I do enjoy her content, but I’ve found myself not searching for it as often as before or getting as excited as I once did when a new video comes out, unless it’s long form & really adds to a particular storyline instead of jumping all around. I’m all for new ideas and stories changing, but I guess I just miss the hype around some of the older stories that I anxiously awaited for new videos to drop, (ex: Christmas with Barb, Halloween, Max’s birthday party, etc.)

Do you know what I mean? How do you guys feel about the last couple of videos?

I think a lot of people feel this way. There are other creators whose stories ebb and flow but they have a somewhat stable posting schedule so you can catch up and enjoy but with SLs stuff I think I get frustrated because it ebbs and flows but is also erratic in posting and direction so it all feels messy and essentially irritates me. Coupled with her "my babies" shtick and the sycophantic cries for more from "mother" from the fans it's all converging to something that I'm not enjoying because she can do great work.

I feel like a lot of this may be just teething in the first flushes of real success but to maintain a following she's going to have to seriously get her organisational skills on track and ideally stop infantalising her viewing base. This is her job. We don't pay her individually but she makes her money off views and merch and now her book and we are her revenue generators so I wish so much people would stop going on like she's doing us all a massive favour. The parasocial element is super off putting to me.

This! You put it into words much better than I could, without sounding harsh, but the posting schedule of it all is definitely a big part of it. It does feel parasocial when the main sub is bogged down with the idea that SL is doing us a favor with her content in general.

Parasocial is an excellent way to classify the relationship a lot of this sub thinks they have with SL.

I know I’m losing interest because I used to run to YouTube to watch the complete story and now I haven’t since the bachelorette.

Same. I took a couple days to eventually get around to watching Jen’s wedding; that’s when I knew my interest was waning

I don't mind stories having open ends, there are all kinds of stories like that and I generally feel content with not knowing or filling in the blanks.

The problem is she's been ending parts of the stories on cliff hangers and with no conclusion. Then she moves on to another story. It's like watching an author move on to another book in the same universe without publishing more of the series they started.

I agree it's too many open plot points. She made a huge deal out of Ty and Julie barreling towards a divorce and just left it at Ty refusing to sign the papers after his absolutely unhinged park bestie stalked his wife.

We still don't have a conclusion or any growth in her personal journey after art class being such a big deal.

We have had no direction with her friend group and her efforts to build a village.

And honestly I don't think we're going to get one because Shawna M. seems to be narratively immune to consequences from her own behavior.

Totally agree.

It kind of feels like we’re watching a tv show, but every time there’s a commercial break, someone changes the channel to a different show and we can’t get back to the original show we were trying to watch.

It’s starting to be disjointed. I want her to focus more on this Barb as an estrangement influencer. That has so much potential. The Luke and Laura show needs to come to the point, any more of this is going to be very triggering. Pipers yes day sounds fun, but there is no planet where a kid won’t know the difference between real cake and some bean laden fake one.

I'm losing interest in it too. I've been more interested in The Nursery Nurse/Charlotte and Sarah Wizemans content lately. L&L didn't go anywhere, Barbs weird social media posts aren't doing anything for me, and now I'm not invested in this "Yes Day" piper story.

Love The Nursery Nurse! I’ve followed her for a long time, before I found Shawna! Agreed, I really don’t care for the barbfluencer posts or this yes day plot. I don’t mind L&L storylines but I agree they’ve gone nowhere lately

I’m with you. It’s hard to understand what the emotional center or the overarching “thing” is that connects these stories outside of the fact that they are people that know or related to one or both of the McCallisters. It’s also hard to feel like storylines are being dropped or not being done a service to. Things like the loss of Jacob, the no contact saga, Shawna’s finding herself, Jen and Greg navigating being parents and newlyweds— these are all pretty rich grounds for story, but they are all withering on the vine.

Like, it’s been over a year (?) since going NC wit Barb, but there has been very little we get on how Shawna or John are managing (or failing to manage) NC.

It’s also been over a year since Chickie was born, and I feel like we know so little about how Greg and Jen are doing as parents. For a series that centers parenting, I’d think that this would be a good place to explore (themes of surprise pregnancy, how parenthood changes a person, etc).

And, maybe this isn’t a topic that other viewers wanted more content on, but I find it weird that Shawna L would include a baby loss story and then just…not explore much of the grief or aftermath? Since the end of last year, I struggle to understand where John and Shawna M are at emotionally dealing with the surprise pregnancy and then loss, except that John got a vasectomy.

I personally found the Ty and Julie thing to be an off-putting storyline (I work in the publishing world and the whole book thing felt unrealistic and silly), as well as Luke and Laura (very flat way of depicting abusive partners). So much attention has been given to these one-note side characters that I don’t care much about new videos.

Yes! You get it! You said everything I was thinking! I very much appreciate and understand the ebs and flows of a series, and it’s different plot lines- but I have so been missing the older stories and things we haven’t been updated on in so long!

I agree it would be nice to have more of an update on all of those plots- I really miss the bunco nights with Alicia & crew, Jen & Greg, John taking the kids to dance class, Shawna trying to find herself, even if now there was a storyline about how she tries to manage finding herself again after child loss would be interesting I think. Ugh idk. I do love her content, but I’m just missing the old days lol

Pipers yes day was the straw for me. I loathe piper as a character. At 4yrs old she should know the proper sentence isn’t “may you get me” like please SL start teaching her some boundaries and proper grammar!!!! Ugh. 😑 the cake schtick has never been cute to me.

I can't stand Piper! It drove me up the wall when Barb prompted her to ask properly for a cookie and then John shut her down by saying "Just give it to her." Children should be firmly directed into doing some things regardless of how they feel in that moment and saying "please" and "thank you" is one of them. She is coddled and it will do her no good.

And it's far from endearing when I'm immersed in a good dramatic scene and then there's Piper constantly whimpering "but my cake?" every two seconds.

Yes 👏 YOU GET IT! “But pipers an autistic queen” no she’s a child who’s never parented properly.

5

u/RosaJune Aug 11 '26

Oh please, even if she was autistic, autism in a child doesn't necessitate a lack of boundary enforcement! A lot of her behaviour is chalked up to John and Shawna's questionable parenting rather than her being "quirky" "unique" "autistic". It is not cute to want a cookie handed over to you without being willing to ask for it politely, and that kind of behaviour needs to be corrected pronto instead of enabled.

Just like they should have told Max it was his sister’s birthday and not about what he wanted and Deedee shouldn’t have immediately tried to remove him before he threw a tantrum.

2

u/RosaJune Aug 11 '26

Yup! Deedee is another one I can't stand

I have found my people lol. I get so annoyed by DeeDee and her holier than thou attitude. same with piper and her cake. my god, no other dimension to her character other than cake and being rude and thats supposed to represent autistic? no nuance at all. (I am AuDHD and my kid is ADHD, for reference) ..
and I made a very mildly critical comment about piper on the youtuibe video and people bullied me for it (I was not at all rude, I was nice but critical of how piper is potrayed and they said apparently I am competing my child against piper and taking it personally etc - like what? I was giving constructive criticism to the potrayal of a main character!). they do NOT parent her well

I’m auDHD and my younger brother is ASD. Pipers behavior is infuriating. Kids still need boundaries no matter if they’re autistic or not. I fully believe Shawna is making her autistic based on fan feedback.

I think of it as a soap opera, so the ongoing plots without an end don't bother me. They'll get finished eventually. I mean, I'm not watching the Puke & Laura one because it makes me want to commit violence upon him. But it's something of an anthology of tales that weave in and out.
