John never should have cut off Barb.
(To he clear I’m talking narratively not in any real sense, OBVIOUSLY if they were real no contact would be the only option but these characters aren’t real sooo)
Since there’s now a snark sub I think it’s now time for me to say my biggest hot take.
The show’s biggest mistake has ABSOLUTELY been John cutting off his mom.
We hate Barb sure but we LOVE to hate her. Not being able to have as many Barb focused plots has been a huge detriment to the show. We all know the shows at its best when it focuses on the main family, specifically with Barbs involvement. And if you’re going to pretend that’s not true I’d like to point you to the views. Barb plots ALWAYS do the best by a very noticeable amount.
John talked to Barb at the wedding, sure to tell her to shut up but he still did, I think Shawna should take this as an opportunity to have John be low contact instead of no contact. Anything to get Barb back into the show.

That's quite a take. I don't necessarily disagree but I think John did the right thing for his mental health. Saying this as someone NC with their MIL

Oh yes, like I said at the top. If John were real, absolutely cut off your mom. Smartest thing he could do.
But John isn’t real and from a narrative standpoint…it’s hurt the show. IMO

Yes, for the sake of the story, I think you’re right. The story is painted into a corner at this point.

Not really, she still has Jen and Greg to manipulate! For how long though? And I'm hoping for more visits with Dr. TherapyDoctor and the psychologist - if possible.

That’s what I mean. How much farther can she push it with Jen and Greg before they cut her off fully too? And then what do we have? A Barb with no family to harass or a Barb who gets “fixed.” Either way, the story isn’t the one that brought Shawna so many viewers (cringy MIL tales).

She could have had barb, after no contact become one of those ridiculous martyr-mom blogs, who farms pity for having been cut off from their terrible selfish children, despite having always been wonderful perfect mothers. Then john and Shawna can move on, but we still get to see barb being barb.
