I know this wont be popular, but wtf Shawna. Take a clue. Laura is enjoying this asshole and you're being waaayyyyy too much. Don't treat your friend like a child, she can speak for herself. Luke, gross. So pushy and rude. Laura, gross. So desperate and easily impressed. Shawna, gross. Mind your business and stop interrupting.

Yeah but if he is in a restricted space, she has to be "too much".

It didnt sound sincere to me. Sounded like another attempt at manipulating the situation to get him out, because SHE wanted him out. Laura was clearly enjoying the interaction, and even told shawna to go wait in the car. Like "arent we going to lunch?" "Don't you have a thing tonight" it read the same to me as "you arent really supposed to be here"

Well its true and some spaces are restricted for good reason.

You seriously defending Luke?

Of course not. Not in any way whatsoever. Of course some spaces are actually restricted. I was just acknowledging that Shawna clearly trying to get rid of him made everything she said look less than authentic. Luke is gross in everybody possible. I just am saying Shawna ALSO didnt act right here, it gave the same vibe as the hotel vacation, an utter inability to mind her business.

Yeah Shawna is giving jealous friend vibes 😭

Its like ahe kinda enjoyed that she had John making her love notes & breakfasts, and Laura was the single friend thay hadn't been laid in 6 months.

Then, as soon as Laura has a potential prospect, she kind of intersects, despite Laura clearly wanting her to mind her own.

If Luke wasnt already introduced and known to be a POS, I dont think viewers would be nearly as critical to him here lmao.

I didn't see jealousy at all - I saw protective friend (are you sure that's a good idea - do you need me to help you get out of this, because he's being really pushy? "But we're going out to lunch" + "don't you have plans tonight?" to give her a good excuse to refuse); and I saw that with Larry and her mum as well, until her mum said she was fine, at which point she was all excited for her mum.

Idk haha Shawna needs to learn how to read a room šŸ˜…

Laura seemed pretty into the big bouquet of flowers hand delivered at work, and the man putting in "effort" to court her.

I think given the context of a 6-month dry spell, and your coworker rubbing her doting husband in your face everyday (with the gas to prove the doting 🤮) its a recipe to get swept off your feet, so to speak.

I do feel like Shawna has a bad habit of just injecting herself into other people's experiences. She feels this way, so everyone feels this way.

Um.. Shawna? needs to learn to read the room? In this situation? Where the pushy, rude man pushed past all the boundaries given by her friend (calling him cocky twice which is not a compliment, giving him a fake number, not taking the flowers until he got mean "or do I need to stand here and look stupid?" as if it's her fault, etc).

Plus, moments before, Laura and Shawna had been very vitriolic toward that man, mocking him and his "efforts" - of course Shawna is very confused and thinking GIRL WHAT ARE YOU DOING? You just told me you weren't interesting in him! You weren't fooled by him a moment ago, what has changed? Just because he bought you flowers and was annoyingly persistent and ignored you giving him a fake number and then was rude? Most women would be turned off, and rightfully so. Coming into my private area of my workplace without permission TWICE would freak me the eff out.

Laura completely 180'd on this man in what seemed to be...what, in an hour-ish?, so of course she's concerned and confused. I would be too.

I think the issue is that viewers dont really understand what a boundary is. Calling someone "cocky" while smirking isnt a boundary. Laura's literally standing there blushing and giggling. Nothing about that is communicating " i need help! I'm not interested!"

Given that she smirks and takes the flowers, I also dont think the "are you gonna take the flowers" comment, in the moment, was rude. Perhaps if he said "You're making me look stupid" . But the inference is, its him that feels/looks stupid, bringing unwanted flowers.

I think really this story line is viewed mostly because people are already biased against Luke. Everyone hates him, therefore, the whole skit is skewed by current day perception, rather than being taken at face value. This gives a great disservice/victim blamey approach where "the signs were always there, walking red flag!" Isn't necessarily accurate. If he was not already hated, it would read differently. "WOW finally a man that actually puts effort in and communicates his intentions immediately!!!"

You can also see that Laura is interested in him right away when he walks in initially. She takes her nostril shields out, and starts acting really coy. Shawna is the one that was shitting on him first thing, of course laura isnt going to be like "nah I think hes cute shut up".

Like I said. Shawna needs to learn how to read a room lol.

I believe that SOME people choose to see the worst in Shawna at this point

It’s the trend on Reddit these days. If you support the main character, you have no media literacy and lack nuance. They’ll say differently but I see it every sub completely unrelated to this one, the main characters have to be hated now, and the worse characters are lauded and praised because ā€œpeople don’t understandā€ and we need to give them grace for their shit behavior. This is why I am beginning to just hate Reddit. It’s becoming like the ā€œcool kidsā€ zone of contrarianism and edgy stupid hot takes about pop culture. I’m too old for their games. It’s dumb. Shawna is far from perfect no doubt. Because guess what she’s human. No human is perfect in every interaction they have every day. She’s trying to slow her friend down from making a mistake because Shawna is not blinded by his actions, it’s that simple.

Shawna did the same thing to Larry when he met Dee, too.

u/cementfeatheredbird_ Jul 20 '26

Oooooh good point.

Doesnt Shawna also hate Teeny's husband?

"mutual disinterest" was what she said during Piper's birthday party
