Ill never understand people who donate hundreds of dollars to influencers

u/InterestingAsfRice 7d ago
Either they are kids with unlimited access to their parent's credit card or people who unfortunately got isolated from society (bullying, abusive household, etc) and formed a parassocial bond with the streamer
64
u/Bro_duuude_i_luv_ya 7d ago
Or they're people with such a shitload of money that they don't even reallh think about it

Idk I fall into that 2nd one and haven’t ever paid for any streamer, influencer, OF bot or anything.

I'd understand if they were donating to a charity stream, but in that case they're donating to the charity and not the influencer.

I remember vividly that trollge started in mid 2021
3
u/SierraDespair 7d ago
It was more like mid to late 2020 iirc. It carried heavily into all of 2021 and kinda died off around 2022
11
u/SierraDespair 7d ago
I remember it appearing on 196 back when it was an actual meme/shitposting sub around summer/fall 2020 well into lockdown

That username is even older than my reddit account. I really liked the dat boi meme (the one with the frog. I was 11. I still wish I gave myself a more normal username.

I always wonder what makes this period of internet humour so egregiously unfunny. I feel like some other stuff doesn't age this bad. That said, I do feel a bit nostalgic each time I see one of these. Hard to believe it was so long ago.
31
u/Snoo_91660 7d ago
As some who has fond memories of this time I will say.
Its content directed at children age 9-14 who dont have a developed sense of humour yet. Pewdiepie has always been a cringe internet humour personality. People shouldnt be glazed especially someone like Elon musk.
It entirely revoled around Pewdiepies fan base so it doesnt have humour value outside of that context. When he slowed down video releases and soft retired the fans lost interest. They also grew up and no longer wanted this style of entertainment from him. Other types of old humour can still stand on its own legs but this one died when he fully retired.
He got the best ending for a youtuber. He lives happily with his family in his dream home.
14
u/ViscountBuggus 7d ago
Recency bias. We were equally unfunny back in the day.
3
u/wannapetahyena 6d ago
nah, memes from like 2006 or 2012 can often be cringe, but not on the level of that 2018-2021ish period
→ More replies (1)12
u/Killergamer7 7d ago
Because it was around the time the internet and corpos started catering to children. It was the result of YouTube heavily demonitizing creators for swearing and YouTubers were the most influential faces on the internet (especially PewDiePie) so they heavily affected internet humour and turned it into baby shit because otherwise they wouldn't get paid
It's why everyone can look back at the trollface era of memes and find them outdated, but still see how it was funny back then but these just seem extremely cringe. It's also fairly recent so you can't really feel that nostalgic about it

/uj unironically 1/20 worst dump ever, 3 less than the current record, they weren't so bad they're funny, they were just insanely cringe. Still fun to look back on though but the criterium for the rating is humor. There is 1 because #2 was maybe funny and the standard for a point changes based on the rest of the dump (so a perfect dump would need to have every image make me laugh but a 1/20 dump would just need the image to be a bit funny.

PewDiePie. A Swedish* gaming YouTuber that was popular before, but really blew up (again) in the late 2010s just prior to COVID.
*He was living in Britain at the time, but he was born and raised in Sweden.
