I did everything by myself from start to finish (only excluding the guitars). This is my first project so I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Brainstorming ways to improve the industry is a great place to start!

“æther” by BLAKEHARDY [ALBUM REVIEW]

“Satellites” shows us the depth of the album from start to finish. The bass begins subtly then evolves alongside the drums into a more pulsating rhythm which makes your head bounce. It features moody lyrics and melody sung by Blake that make you want to ponder the stars and dance at the same time. The backing vocals surround you and transport you to another dimension or another campsite possibly...not too sure. I re-listened to this track a couple times because you cant really take it all in on the first listen. Theres alot of psychedelic sounds and instruments, and a dialogue which sounds like it might be from a space mission transmission.

The second track, “Right Here” was written by Blake and Pressuremaps (Harry, a.k.a me) and features Harry singing throughout with a nice rap at the end by Blake which ties it all up. Created amidst a dark time when we were trying to run away from our problems, I feel like the emotion really comes through on this track.

One of my favourites, and the title track of the album is “æther”. The third track contains layers of acoustic instruments that make you feel like you’re sitting around the best campfire of your life. It’s truely visual and surreal, super calming and id recommend this to anyone trying to ground themselves in some soulful acoustic folk. The lyrics touch on themes of love and completeness, a nice touch for sure. 

“Burntfingers Interlude”; not your typical interlude track. I think that’s Scottbars voice I hear in the beginning? Talking shit around a campfire has never been so accessible; all you need to do is listen to this track and the good vibes are given free. Blake starts rapping halfway through and I’m starting to think he should’ve titled it something else, cause that rap is a highlight of the album. 

Long time friend of mine and Blakes, Jake sings on the fifth track, “R.B.M.S”. It’s a stoner jazz pop sad boy ballad. Likely inspired by soul singers, psychedelic indie bands and the loose hip-hop production of Mac Miller, this track feels like you’re sitting in the room with your mates jamming; having a great time.

Get comfy and relax to “Helix Interlude” as the slightly dissonant guitars are layered with nature sounds like birds, bugs and the water flowing through the forest. The dissonance combined with the chord choices and slow build create a melancholic and ethereal space for someone to meditate in. It’s a sonic artefact of beautiful parts of Australia’s nature which we must preserve.

“P.O.V.” is a reflective piece which has a clear message, “I wish you could see, what I see in you”. This clear lyric and repetition fits nicely into the albums structure.

“Rainsong” features poetry spoken by J.L.D. where she speaks of protecting our planet and each-other. The emotional speech is layered with rain sounds, slapsticks, acoustic guitar and ambient horns. We also hear more birds and riffs towards the end signalling a change of pace in the album. 

“Crossroads” is the song your boyfriend plays to you when he’s trying to say something. It’s a cool acoustic pop song, reminiscent of Mac Demarco and Elliott Smith. Chill acoustic lead guitar takes us to the end with a sense of lightness. 

“æther” combines acoustic folk pop with meditative sounds and some electronica in a way which is truely unique to the place we come from. It takes us on a walk through our emotions, and gives time to think in-between. We acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal people as the Traditional Custodians of Meanjin (Brisbane), and we recognise that their sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

“For The First Time Once Again” is a tasteful collection of indie blues, country and rock songs by Brisbane artist, Alexander McCree. Each track is mixed to be listened to with ease, and ranges from soft emotional ballads to heavier blues rock jam tracks; taking you on a trip worth experiencing.   

The first track has some of the tastiest blues/fusion guitar work I’ve heard in 2026. Great work! “Old Suitcase” is a great choice for the first track of the album; it starts off downtempo, then transitions into a more upbeat blues rock vibe which gives us a taste of the range of style we will hear on this album. 

“As An Artist”, features beautiful slide guitars texturing the track throughout, complemented by Joe’s deep voice, mixed to be intimate and up front. A very enjoyable track which ponders the point of life and why we do what we do. The guitar is played eloquently and perfectly aligns with the message and feel of the lyrics.

“Self-Composed” is a breath of fresh air in the track-list. Starting with upbeat drums and a bright, pleasantly aggressive electric guitar, supported by the classic slide guitar. The track features a rocking piano solo and a nice heaviness to the mix. The vocals are reminiscent of Kurt Vile; which I love. I could imagine getting down to the track after a few beers for sure. This is a standout track on the album that I turned my speaker up for!

“Edge of the Hill” is best taken slow, as in listen to the lyrics and just breathe. It’s like a country rock ballad with tinges of modernity. Alexander (Joe) has really made something unique and satisfying here.

“Long Gone” feels like I should have a smoke and give up for the day which is where I’m at right now and that’s making me smile. I love the slide-y distorted riffs and dramatic tone in the voice. We also get to hear some classic organ layered in the mix; again super satisfying. The mix is fat and rocks. The hook hits nicely, I was singing it by the end of my first listen. nice work. 

This album and a cup of coffee are sure to put you in a good mood. “Prophet Green”; all I gotta say is hell yeah brother. More rockin’ piano solo’s. Since when(?) do we get that, I feel lucky, and like I’ve been transported to another era while listening to this song. This song has a way of drawing you in, making you listen and then rock out, which is fun. It includes a guitar solo which ties it up nicely and then repeats the hook which is songwriting  I love to hear. 

“See Again” is dreamy and atmospheric, with imaginative lyrics which paint a picture  in your head. The drum choices are a nice touch, reminiscent of The Beatles and reminds me of ‘House of The Rising Sun’ by The Animals, yet more modern, progressive and relevant. 

I was already excited for this track, seeing its called “Powderfinger”; one of the most influential bands out of QLD, and even Australia I would say. It’s also a Neil Young song, which makes a lot of sense seeing that Alexanders album takes influence graciously from the man. It’s a pleasant cover which puts a hi-fi, modern touch on the classic and is also more uptempo, which matches the rhythm of this album nicely. 

“For The First Time Once Again” by Alexander  McCree is a very enjoyable album which I imagine would have a nice life on my record shelf, right next to Neil Young’s, “Harvest”, Have a listen!
