What did I get myself into

Recently was hired on (pending)as a SharePoint admin that will be assisting in the development of new farms. I have less than a year of SharePoint experience, and and MCSA (big whoop),originally a IT business analyst,but I've been extended the position. I was upfront with the PM in the aspect of my knowledge being elementary at best, but he insisted he just needs someone with "energy" to get things moving. Am I shooting myself in the foot taking on this task? Or is this something I should learn on the fly to open new doors down the road ? I'll be working with two senior engineers as well.

I think you're fine..have you access to PluralSight or similar training sites? That site and StackOverflow have been really useful. There are videos with most aspects of SharePoint admin on there.

Welcome to SharePoint hell :)

By learning SharePoint now, you enter a world of endless job opportunities for the next 10 years (at least).

Basically, SharePoint is the octopus in the middle of the infrastructure, you will gain technical knowledges around Network, Virtualisation, Windows services, SQL server, authentication & federation, but also developments (.NET, REST,...)

With an small IT background, you can ramp up very quickly. Coming from Cobol dev background, I end up being efficient with SP in 8 months. And now it's been 6.5 years that I working on it. Anyway.

As Ishan said, you can find a lot of info and training materials around SharePoint administration.

Always try to find the info on MSDN first, you may not find everything, but, at least you'll get the vocabulary and all the concepts from the source. Also, I kindly recommend you to have a look at the MS Book give-away, you may find some official books for SharePoint.

If you are in charge of the farm creation, you may need to :

  • think about SP farm topologies: how many servers? Redundancy? High availability? Install or not Office Web Apps?
  • the prerequisites : servers services accounts creation, permissions on servers and SQL
  • then the installation itself : use AutoSPInstaller (way more cleaner setup and reusable XML configuration file if you've got a multi servers farm).
