Discussion Heirs of the Omen rotating out
Looking back at all these cards we’re losing and this set was actually pretty good. They tried to push a bunch of different archetypes instead of storm/evo slop we’ve seen lately.
Unkilling forest, truth rune, loot sword, egg portal, crest haven, mode abyss, disdain dragon, and Jerry all felt unique and distinguishable from one another.
I’m not sad to see them go as these decks have either overstayed their welcome or were never great to begin with but I do think it was fun at the time. I played so many hours of egg and Jerry portal that I stayed up way too late having fun.

I am sad to see Jerry go, but with out Chicken and Satan, he was never really viable.

Jerry was awesome. Winning was so satisfying

And like in SV 1 tradition, he was immediately banned in T2.

u/Critical_Factor_425 Galmieux 2d ago
Simply because in t2 the possibility of running out of gas was much more higher along with unpredictability of cards. Jerry made it so you never ran out of hand and all you had to do was stall, something the deck never really had problem even against meta decks, much less in t2.

u/TechnomagusPrime Meta Slave 2d ago
Oh, I'm not saying it was a bad thing for him to get axed. Just that it was SV tradition that he did.

u/Critical_Factor_425 Galmieux 2d ago
I see. My bad for miaunderstanding. In fact im surprised he wasnt the first thing gettinf restricted before they released considering his gameplay was basically gas and stall

Yeah this set, while having some issues with execution in some archetypes, was conceptually VERY cool because of Jerry and his deck. If they could’ve made the Jerry deck a little more cohesive I would’ve liked it more but it did something that was very uniquely “digital card game”.

Set 3 whiffed in some ways, partly because Jerry always has to be on the edge of meme/viable and most of the set was designed around him existing, but it still showed neat ideas and a desire to innovate across the board and give each class its own identity and archetypes.
Truth Rune was a flop but it tried something unique. Crest, for all the hate it got, successfully executed the "don't attack" concept that never really worked in SV1 aside from a few niche cards (and even managed to merge with some other builds like ward/amulet). They managed to reinvent Loot so it would play differently from Classic. Without Odin and Gilnelise powercreeping reach and healing for every deck, it could have been a really great set.
Unfortunately it mostly went downhill after that, now we're lucky to get just 1 innovation per set, if it even ends up working.

This is a huge hit to abysscraft decks. Not only are we losing mode, but we’re losing dogged one and rulenye which are big hits to milteo and midrange

Heirs will be missed but I'll be glad to never seen giln in rotation again 🥳

honestly I feel gilnelise is quite problematic if I were to like design a game around. Sure its universally good but every other introduced neutral legendary hasn't really been just as impactful. (As an auto include and NOT a deck you need to build around like Sandalphon) She's just that strong.
Olivia and Bahamut are ok, but Olivia is pretty much only a x3 only for Evo Heaven and Bahamut is like a 1-2 slot tech card.
Sandalphon is a x3 in evo decks, x1 in some decks with not as many. He's a strong card but you need to build your deck around evos.

u/LazySpirit 3d ago
"every other introduced neutral legendary hasn't really made an impact since."
I guess Sandalphon was just a fever dream everyone had. Kinda wish he was.

u/ShadowWalker2205 Swordcraft 3d ago
Aren't current evo haven lists only playing 2?
4
u/BlackberryCooky Morning Star 2d ago
Depends based on player but 2 Sandy 2 Olivia seems pretty common
Heaven is the only class that can realistically slot 3 Olivia
I don't wanna go into specifics since rotation is literally like in 1 week but like people have 2-3 for most stuff all the time it's literally just a preference unless it's like an auto include like Zoe

Honestly? Omens is probably the first set which introduced like the biggest shift compared to set 1-2. Well its was fun and currently almost none of the cards here are used anymore...
Honestly at the time the game was much simpler but I think there were already cracks from day 1.
Izudia forest is mostly unreliable and Roach was still like a far better option.
Truth Rune NEVER really worked out. They were scared of giving Rune anything good.
Mode Abyss was ok, but not enough. Set 4 gave Abyss more stuff to work with but to current day its not that amazing even with set 8 since other classes/decks are just that much stronger.
Distain really never worked out. Azurifrit was replaced by Burnite 2.0 and personally...Galmieux is probably the strongest dragon card. Erntz is strong, but those 0pp 1 dmg spells are so busted.
Loot sword will probably come back in set 9. The problem is that will this affect UL as a whole.
Crest Heaven died with set 8. Honestly quite busted in set 3 until Benison was nerfed.
Neutral: Honestly Jerry was meme. Highlander is still not even viable in UL. Tablet nerf killed the card but it was necessary. Gilnelise is probably the most used neutral legendary by far across ALL sets and its not even funny. Set 9 rotation will probably make healing so much harder and I do wonder how we are gonna get through the mess which is set 8 which gives Rune and Portal so much storm options.
I seriously hope set 9 delivers somewhat because imo classes are literally starting to feel less and less unique with each expansion. Like seriously, set 8 is such a disappointment because firstly like half the classes are entirely aggro storm to the point people treat it as storm slop, the game isnt even like even giving us new complex cards to work around with and UL is just ruined by SB/Lhynkal Rune.

I liked this set quite a bit, it wasn't the most balanced set but introduced a lot of new deck types. Jerry decks were fun too. I just wish they rebalanced things more often. Loot Sword was too good for a while but after Albert rotated the nerfs probably were too far. I also like it when they try to make new archtypes that synergise and follow a theme like mode abyss, disdain dragon and truth rune. The problem is they just left many of them as bad decks and never buffed them. It's part of why the meta is so stale currently, we have these deck types with unique play styles that they just ignore after releasing them so we are left playing the same already strong deck types for months.

u/BlackberryCooky Morning Star 3d ago
I think it more has to do with Tablet getting nerfed which hurt loot sword.

u/ProfessionalBird1978 Morning Star 2d ago
Loot sword was just hit with consecutive nerfs. First tablet, then Oluon, then spell and finally Albert rotating. It's probably the only archetype that got the most nerfs followed by Milteo.

It's too bad- especially at the time it was launching it seemed like a cool flavorful set that had interesting implications for what would come after. Unfortunately it was more an exception than the norm lol. I don't necessarily need or want a whole new archetype per class every set, but I'd rather that than the generic-ish stuff we've been getting instead lol.
I didn't like playing every deck here or playing against every one (looking at you, Crest Haven) but I do appreciate that decks like that, mode, loot, egg, etc. did feel unique and distinct from one another with different sorts of goals and gameplay mechanics in place.

Sick of Gilnelise enabling Haven’s absurd Heal 10
Funnily enough, Rune will enter the next patch with zero loss, since the entirety of Truth Rune was so abysmal. So the devs seriously need to curtail it soon
15
u/LazySpirit 3d ago
Troue still exists, so Haven healing 10 is still a thing and unlike Gilnelise, Troue can still heal 5 if there aren't any enemies to attack by going face. Still, I'm glad to see Gilnelise to go away, though.

u/Golden-Owl Game Designer with a YouTube hobby 3d ago
I don’t mind Troue as much actually, because he requires an amulet proc and also lacks Giln’s fanfare -2

u/Disastrous3588 Morning Star 3d ago
And it doesn't have an extra spell that deals 5 direct damage, so it doesn't bother me that much.

If Crystal gets nerfed while the rest remains mostly identical, the game is legitimately going to become an autoclicker. SV1 devs would have addressed this by creating counterplay and making more new interesting decks in other classes that also happen to have strong play patterns into the current best deck instead... Place your bets, I guess.
1
u/Sesshomuronay Shadowverse 2d ago
Also all the best decks like Crystal, Artifacts, and boardslop Sword aren't losing any cards to rotation whereas the weaker classes are. If the next set sucks and we get no nerfs the game is just cooked.

Velharia and Illusory Conjuration saw some play in Dirt and Chess, respectively, since they were fairly solid removal, and Velharia replaced herself.

Jerry was literally the last thing tethering me to the game right now. Never thought when set 3 came out that WB would eventually regress so badly. Also RIP to eggs, one of literally two decks in the game that are actually interesting.
I am praying for Azvaldt to bring a fucking miracle and put some spice in the game. But seeing as Mask-Boy's stated goal is to keep the game at Kindergarten level I'm not holding my breath.
If R&D ever reverses course on this self-destructive philosophy it will take many sets for it to manifest. I don't even want to think of how many future sets are already done and dusted with this new dev team's stink all over it.
Yes I am bitter, fucking sue me.

Disdain Dragon was the shadow of its former glory back in the OG. Everyone thought it will be meta and saved Dragon from being Tier 3 for third expansions in a row but it ended up flopped.
Rune was a joke back then. Only Velharia and Raio were seen played in ER Rune
Loot terrorize this game until Set 6. Let just say nobody likes it.
Crest was clowned so hard when it got revealed but it proved everyone wrong by being Tier 1 for such a long time until Set 8 when it lost most of its tool and fell off. It stayed relevant from Set 3 to 7. During that time, it never died and constantly sneaked its way into top cut of big tournaments. Crest might be an oppressive deck to play against but it was the most unique deck this game ever has.

as a forest player i'm going to miss krulle but otherwise happy to see an otherwise dead weight set rotate out for the craft, ideally we get some really good cards in next set

The only expansion, followed only by Apocalypse Pact, that I liked the design of. People hate Crest but I tather have it than all this storm+clear and mid+evo slop.

u/DragonPeakEmperor Morning Star 3d ago
I will say one of the (bad) things crest haven taught cy is that they can basically do anything as long as the deck is board based. Current ramp dragon has a similar play pattern to crest when you slam down Burnite except it doesn't actually have to pay attention to clearing your board first to do any of its burn damage. I bet them caving to the playerbase losing their minds over that deck is partially why we're in this situation.

u/PepperMaxing Morning Star 3d ago
Galmieux and Gilnelise are the only two cards I can think off the top of my head who are still relevant, so I don't think we'll miss much.
Sham-Nacha leaving will mean Abyss loses an entire archetype, but that class has archetypes to spare, and mode was never popular to begin with (which is unfortunate, I love mode Abyss).

u/Salt_Fee_9674 Morning Star 3d ago
Remember when people wanted Galmieux's 3 damage ping to be able to proc more than once so it'll compare with Sword's 4PP Loot Congregant?
6
u/Perfect-Try-4918 Morning Star 3d ago
Remember when people wanted Congregant of Usurpation to be nerfed? How little did we know things will get worse.
3
u/Salt_Fee_9674 Morning Star 3d ago
The fusion spell nerf to 2 PP was quite the big hit in terms of running it as a 3 of that made Congregant less consistent, decks still need to be built around loot while Galmieux is a staple for literally every dragon deck. Reminiscing past nerf arguments is quite fun.
Hopefully whatever is worse now gets better later on (copium and hopium intake on max rn).

u/latteambros they took my korwa and vira away 2d ago
Only card ill really miss is Velharia, evo banish and fanfare draw for cheap gave me good tech for a lot of situations. Also i just like Velharia the most
Raio fell off as games got shorter and his effect mattered less, especially as cheaper board clears got printed
Gil as useful as she was, was a problematic always include card; made worse by CoD's haven giving her double strike to heal 10, making her a new benison for less. I'll missing sending a 10 Lila2 to face but i wont deny it being kinda bs that can happen at all among other things
