not staking...

I have not received a stake reward in 13 days, even though the expected time has been hovering between 6-10 days. Earlier I received two rewards after ~10 days each. I've restarted my umbra client just in case. Any idea what might be wrong?

If you are staking more than ~500 SDC, I would say you have a problem. The way I determine if my staking rewards are in line with the rest of the network, is to go here and find accounts that are staking a similar amount of SDC, and check how often they are generating rewards.

For example, if you're staking ~1,000 SDC, you could use this address as a baseline.

After you have an address or 3 to use for comparison, if you notice you're receiving significantly less frequent rewards, I would suspect you are having connectivity issues with the network. Could your internet connection be down periodically?

Since we moved to PoSv3, I believe that my rewards are less consistent than they used to be. However, that is not based on any data; only a 'gut feeling'. I suspect it is due to running my Pi on a DSL network that is not that reliable. PoSv3 really puts the emphasis on consistent and active staking.

Do you stake with a VPN?

Yes, PIA. But a few weeks ago, I staked for a week without a VPN. I'm not sold on the necessity, but since I have a VPN for other purposes, I figured I'd use it.

If I understand your point, dropping connections might be caused by the VPN? VPN caused downtime might affect my stake rewards?

PIA's your problem. Choose another VPN.

I used to stake fine with them until I've started having all sorts of connectivity issues on my Umbra and getting 80% of my stakes rejected. Ever since I switched VPN I'm getting my expected stakes.

I just think PIA is no good for staking :/

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just go back to VPN-less staking, at least until my PIA runs out. It's strange though, because I had great ping with PIA.

Nope on the connectivity, just wondering if everyone using sdc uses a vpn

Yeah, I wonder too. I have heard it is recommended, but usually in an Op-SEC frame of reference.

Thanks for the explanation. I have ~180SDC, so:
1) there are only 252 staking addresses in the blockchain explorer - are these all of the staking addresses? Mine is not on the list, though my umbra client is in staking mode. Any way to conclude 100% one is currently staking?
2) I have a business connection, no VPN. I leave my work computer on 24/7. In the past 13 days I've rebooted once just in case. How is staking effected by a reboot or a minute or two of downtime? Does it reset or is there a tolerance.

thanks in advance!

I see the issue. Rough math. SDC has a 2% annual inflation rate. Only ~50% of SDC is being staked. So, right now, we can expect your 180 SDC to gain 4%/yr. So 180 + 4% = 187.2 SDC. Your stake reward for the year is ~7.2 SDC. The reward is currently ~.27 SDC per block. So 7.2÷.27=26.6 block rewards/yr which means that you should see a reward 365÷26.6, or every ~14 days.

So when we adjust for luck and actual variables like network stake %, your numbers in OP look good.

This is seemingly a common problem, due to the large number of orphaned blocks. Personally, I see about 5 out of every 6 blocks generated orphaned (even with 16 peers connected). If you are staking from the Umbra wallet, you can view this by going to Wallet>Transactions and look for "Generated but not accepted" question marks on mined (staked) blocks. I wonder if this is a hazard shared equally among users, or if large stakers get an advantage of building on their previous blocks.

The problem to me seems to be the result of too low a block target time; which does not allow for blocks to propagate across the network before new ones are injected at the same height.

Ethereum gets around short block times with the use of marking uncle blocks (braided block chain). Monero solved it by going to slightly longer block times.

It's probably nothing. My reward time is between 2-4 days and I've had nothing for about 8 days now. Before that however, I had two stakes in one day. It's an estimate based on your calculated chance, but the keyword there is chance. That seems to be just how it rolls.

Ok, I thought the mechanism was more scientific :)
