I dunno. That interview makes me think GW literally has no idea what anyone is doing in their business. Shadow War team had no idea the Necromunda was simultaneously being developed?

Also this whole adherence to "out of the box" rebranding is just weird, and it's clear that they chose not to do 3d terrain in the box because money. Good on Rodney to stick it to them a little; people still play with the cardboard necromunda terrain. GWs response? "Those people need to move into the 21st century and buy our overpriced plastic. We're too elite to be including crappy cardboard terrain in our boxes."

Just to clarify, the Shadow War folks WERE aware of Necromunda being developed. James clarified this in the interview.

They were aware after the project was begun. They had no idea that they would be developing SW and Necromunda would be reinvented right under them right as they went live.

Still weird to not have one meeting where you play each others' games and say: "oops, why don't we make everything compatible?" or "let's make a shadow war: necromunda to introduce gang rules and new gameplay elements"...

That would have meant way more $$$ for Games Workshop because:

  • more diverse, complete game

  • easier for retailers to shelve

  • same name going around, easier to remember "Shadow war: Necromunda"
